Subject: Kappa perfects and Thunderform

Message:
Well guys, I got a new question.

A few months ago I purchased a amped and loaded thunderform. Well since then I have upgraded all my other speakers to infinity kappa perfects. Componets up front and 3 way in the rear. Well anyway I finaly got around to hearing the 10" kp subs and I must say they are some of the most acurate subs that I have heard.

What I wanted to know is if the 10 kappa OR kappa perfects will fit into a thunderform, AND how the hell do I wire it if I opted for the amped box. Of corse I will be getting a new amp, probable a Rockford Power (know the punches are better but I like the blue lol). Can I just wire it right though the amp that is already in the box, or will i get no responce since it will be getting no power. I have looked around and I did not see any other fittings to wire into.

The box DOES have a spot to place standard + & - to wire but it is also PART of the amp. will this work if I just wire though that?

The last thing I do is to have to drill a hole though the box so that I can get the wiring though. Please tell me there is another option.

Thanks all,

your help is always apreciated.

Always thankfull,
Ben J.

If the sub you are replacing it with states it can operate with 100w then just use the built in amplifier. Your most important thing to check is the air space requirement. If you don't have the right amount of space then a $1000 sub will sound like a $29 Pyramid sub. I'd recommend staying with the T6000 that came with the Thunderform and just getting a bigger amp. And you CAN NOT wire thru the existing amp. You can remove the stock amp and use it's sub speaker wire or simply leave it in place and drill your own wire hole, but make sure you seal around the new hole..

thanks for the reply!

Unfortunatly I still need some help. First and formost I have 2 rockford POWER 350 watt amps that I want to hook to the 10" Kappa perfics that I MAY be buying, but as I stated befor I need to know if they will fit or if there will be a problem. Also, how the heck do I remove the sock amp??? When I did my install it seemed that it was VERY well in there. And if I remove it will there be a big hole where it once was? I REALLY REALLY REALLY do NOT NOT NOT want to drill though my box but if that is where I come to then well so be it.

PLEASE if ANYONE know the answers to my questions or if there is another alternative to drilling into the box PLEASe tell me it would be MOST apreciated.

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Doh I forgot to say, the reason that I do NOT want to use the stock amp is that 100 watts per sub is not enough for the kappa's (fine for the modified 6000 though). The kappas are rated at 350 watts @ 4 ohms with a 1400 watt peak. I do not think that the stock amp will do anything for that.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Always thankfull,

Hey Ben, answered this on another thread, but, you can't run the RF output into the MTX amp's input. The RF's output will cook the MTX amp. You need to wire the Infinity's directly to the RF amp(s). This means that there's no way to connect the RF's to the Infinity's without drilling through the box, unless you can figure out how to get the MTX amp out and use this hole to route the wires.

What you can do is get a speaker wire terminal cup or two from RadioShack, take it apart and throw away the plastic peice so you can mount the metal connectors in the box. You will only need to drill a couple of small holes in the box and it shouldn't look all hacked up with the nice + - connectors.

THANKS DSW!!!

I did read you post on the other topic. Thanks for replying to both!

It looks like I paid $430.00 for just a thunderform.

also I know that the subs are not uber great in my amped and loaded tform (that why I am gettin new stuff), but can the subs be used for another person? Like if I get a nice box for 2 10's and use on of the rockford 350 watt powers that I have. It is a 4 ohm amp and I hear that these are 7 ohm subs. can I just hook them up or will they not work.

Thanks in advanced.

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

From what I know, the MTX subs in the TF are .7 ohm subs (less than 1 ohm), run them in series and you have a 1.4 ohm load. This load would cook a 4 ohm stable amp, you will need a 1 ohm stable amp. Heck, I never had a TF, just read a couple of threads describing the .7 ohm MTX subs in the TF.

These subs were powered by a 100W amp and probably won't handle much power. So if you get a nice 1 ohm stable amp the power it puts out will probably cook the subs. See if you can unload the amped loaded TF to someone you know, then pick up a unloaded one for your project. If it was me I would bite the bullet and keep the loaded TF since it's a royal pain to get the TF's out.

I would question if the TF is stable enough to put realy powerful subs in without the enclosure flexing. It handles the 100W subs fine, but it sounds like your going to be pushing 700W through the Infinity's. TF might do some flexing since it's built of plastic and make the subs sound like crapola.

Well, I guess I am at a cross road. On one hand the thunderform hit MUCH harder than I need it to. I am not much of a bumper, lol. But On the other hand these subs sound very muddy at high levels. This is the main reason for getting the kappa perfict subs. They are the cleanest I have heard. also I can turn the gain down and crank the volume to get a nice clean bass line.

I guess I am going to ahve to bit the bullet and leave the 6000's In the box and invest in my girls sc1 or the 240sx.

Over all I would say my system is WAY above 90% of everyone elses in my town. And the clarity for the type of music I listen to is seacond to none. It is just when my friend ride with me and listen to rap, that my feathers get a little ruffled because my subs are not uber clean. But that is ok.

Thanks again for all the help. If anyone lives in the north seattle area post back maby we can meet.

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Is this the TF for the CC or QC? I had the one for the QC, and the 10.1 Perfect would not fit.

For the Club cab. I have *heard* that the thunderfrom is deep enough but not wide enough for the large magnet.

So if anyone has a good idea please share.

Don't know if you got an aswer to your question or not, but unfortunately, no, they don't fit.

I have the perfects (which are awesome BTW), but when I sat them in the thunderform box, it went in the hole fine, but hit the bottom with about 2.5-3 inches sticking out.

Someone suggested that I make a lot of fiberboard rings, but the seat wouldn't close if I did that.

The thunderforms are slightly smaller than recomended anyway for those speakers.

I found a guy who makes some good boxes for these speakers and sell them on ebay and on his own website stealthboxes.com.

I bought one and I'm waiting for it to arive now.
From the description and his website, this box looks like the best answer for someone wanting to put the infinity perfect subs in their dakota, with the right size box, and still have a back seat!

To get the box for these you'd have to select "the deep box" instead of "the stock box" (look on ebay and you'll know what I'm talking about).

Here's the ebay item number:
2461002334

Hope this helps and I hope you finaly got an answer to your question.

HEY!

Thanks for replying. I did find out my answer to the question after I called mtx and asked about ten times over. They were actualy quite rude, but that is another story.

Anyway THANKS for replying to my old post. It is nice to know people still surf the other pages. I have looked into stealthboxes.com and he is quite good. I would recomend them to anyone. It is a MUCH better deal that the thunderfrom. I really wish I had gone that route, but he was not up for buisness when I odered my ThUnderform.

Anyway I have moved on to bigger and better things (20"rim, hood, front valance, and soon a trotlebody from F&B).

So thanks again for the reply.

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Hey, Ben I'm going through the same problem of finding a sub that will fit. My results after months of research have come down to this. From my experience there are only 3 subs that are worth replacing the MTX's. They are the Polk MM104's, the Elemental Design 10k's and the IDQ10D2 V.2's. I'm going with the Polk MM104's.

Dear Eric,

I would adivse against the polk audio subs. I have quite a few polk surround systems in my house. Their old stuff was great one of the best buys you could get. But as of late I have heard bad things from them.

A few quick things:

1)I do not feel the subs are rated corectly, They seems to need an execive amount of power to get in their sweet spot and they do not seem to hit as low as other subs rated in the same level.

2) the VC on the subs is prone to early burn out. something that is not a problem in their midrange speakers, only the subs.

3) Although they are very competitavly priced they do not hold their value well. As you know almost ALL car audio loses 50% of it value as soon as you open the box, but good quality nice name brand stuff sould have a resale value of around 65% of what you paid (providing it is in good working condition). This is not the case of the Polks. Their price drops LIKE A ROCK (cheack ebay) which is good for people who want cheep speakers, bad for people who change their systems often (like me).
Alot of this is due to the shoddy VC's.

If I were going to chose I would DEFINATLY go with the elemental designs. They are a VERY high quility well constructed speaker which will sound good at almost any power level. The IDQ's are also up there in the quality range, but I would only go that rout if you need to save the cash.

Cliff notes:

Thanks for replying
Polk WAS a great company
Polk is NOT what they used to be
Polk is a ok midrange competitavly priced speaker
The VC's on the polks are not so hot (or too hot...lol)
ED subs are a good choice
IDQ's are good if you doin't have the money for the ED'd

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

I agree with Ben J, stay away from the Polk sub. I smoked a 12 in 3-4 months, the voice coil was trashed. The Polk sub replaced a MTX 12" that took 5 years to burn up, both speakers handled the same power, but the Polk only lasted a couple of months before meltdown.

But, that's just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Hey DSW,

Thanks for conforming what I have been trying to tell my friends for months. Polk is getting very cheep as of late and are not a good place to invest your money in.

I really apreciate all the help you give around here and you willingness to reply to even the hardest questions. Where are you located? I would love to see and hear your setup. I am north of seattle WA, which is probably no where near you.

But anyway Thanks for the reply, nice to hear from you again.

True the Polks did have problems with their subs, but it was due to a manufacture's defect. From what i've heard is that all Polk subs were recalled and the problem was fixed. BTW even ED had problems with their subs for awhile there.

I trust that Polk has fixed this problem and that's why I purchased them.

The only Ed that would fit in my box was the K. If it was the O or the A then i'd definitely go with those. But since they wont fit the polk MM104 is what i'm going with.
