Subject: Which CD canger for a 2000 Dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
I have had my 2000 Dakota with V6 magnum for about 5 weeks now. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it has no CD player. It has the AM/FM Cassette player with CD changer controls (this is the one with the built in EQ). I would like to add a CD changer but do not know which models will work with this radio. Can anyone point me to where I can find this info?

Think there was someone on Ebay selling Sherwood changers that were supposed to be Dodge Chrysler OEM units. From what I remember they said the CD changers would work with Dodge radios that had CD controls. This was about 5 months ago and they were selling for $80. Hope this helps

I have actually seen some CD changers on ebay that say they are for Dodge vehicles. They usually say they are for certain years though. Sometimes there will be different listings for what appears to be identical changers, but the descriptions list them as being for different years. I wonder if the seller actually knows which years it will realy fit. This is why I would like to know the model numbers of factory units that would work with my head unit. That way if I see one I can ask the seller for the model number and know for sure if it will work with mine or not.

Yup, that's why I went with aftermarket stuff instead of trying to figure out what changer would hook up to my OEM AM/FM cassette unit. Plus, if you do get it off Ebay and the OEM/Sherwood unit was a piece of crap, then your out $100.

My wife got me a Pioneer DEH-P77DH head unit for my birthday,,, and I got her my Christmas present, he he, a Pioneer P680 CD changer. All together it was $330, but probably more than you want to spend since your just looking for a changer.

I thought about just replacing the head unit with an AM/FM CD player. But after listening to the factory radio for awhile I am happy with it other than not being able to play CDs. I decided to go for the CD changer because I thought that it would be the easiest way to go. Only one cable to hookup, right?

Don't know if the OEM stereo/CD controller utilizes only 1 cable to connect to the deck, I would hope so. My Pbus Pioneer only had 1 cable and the FM changers only have 1 that hooks into the antenna lead.

You could also try to get a used AM/FM/CD off Ebay or run a FM modulated CD changer, The FM modulated changer probably won't run off the deck controls though. Heck with a stock stereo I bet a FM modulated changer would sound good, I just wouldn't use one if upgrading speakers and adding amps.

You could also place a post here to see if anyone has a used OEM CD deck, just be warry of the year and connections on the back of the deck.

I have never liked the FM modulated changers. I don't want to change the head unit. I am assuming that it would not be that hard to hook up the one cable for a CD changer. I haven't actually looked, though, so it might be as much trouble as changing the head unit.

Yeah, I am no fan of the FM modulated changers either, but for a stock system you probably won't notice the sound difference.

Connecting a OEM style changer to your OEM deck is going to be as much work as replacing the deck with another OEM deck since you have to pull out the deck to plug in the changer cable. But, it probably takes all of 15 minutes to pull the deck out.

Connecting a FM changer to the OEM deck looks pretty simple. There's a break in the antenna wire behind the glove box, so all you need to do is make the changer connection there. If you open the glove box and then press in on the stop clips to let the glove box drop down you can see the connection right about the center of the glove box, the antenna cable is wrapped in foam.

I don't like the FM's either, but they are cheap, realy easy to install on our Dak's and won't sound bad with a stock stereo.

Hello,
I just pulled an AM/FM/CD out of my 2000 Dakota and it took all of 5 min.I replaced it with an AM/FM/Cass. I asume is what you have now. I bought an OEM Mopar 6 cd changer on eBay for $110.00 and it took about 30 minutes to route the cable from behind my seat to up under the dash. I went around the passenger side and had to pull the front and rear(behind the seat) Kick panels to run the cable along side of the ostock rear speaker cables.
After hooking everything up "Click Click" the cd changer powers up but I think the used AM/FM Cass. I bought is CHICHI Arribas.as it does not operate the cd changer. Everywhere I look says they should go together but I can't tell which part is not working properly. For now I will assume that the brand new never benn used cd changer is working and the Head unit is CRAP

Larry,

It is possible they are not compatible. I found an auction for the AM/FM tape player which I already have and the CD changer that works with it. Even showed a piture of the head unit display as it was being used to control the changer. The seller included model numbers for both in his description, so now I know what to look for. Factory Chrysler Tape deck, Model #P04858502 & Chrysler facotory CD-CHANGER Model #P04882420. These are listed on the back of the equipment. If these are the same ones you have then it could still be either one that is faulty, or maybe even the cable.

You got the changer on ebay, but you do not say where the AM/FM casset player came from. while it could be the culprit, not all ebay sellers are honest, so the "brand new never been used cd changer" could be a piece of crap that someone pulled out of a garbage can and decided to make a buck on it.

Hey Kenith,
I'm still trying to match my AM/FM/Cassette with cd controls with the right Changer. No luck so far. I can't find anyone at the local dealers who can tell me what changer goes with what head unit. event with the model numbers. I found another Mopar changer on eBay which looks like it might match and the seller of my other one is sending me a Sherwood changer So we'll see which one if either works. I'll keep in touch

Hi Larry,

Haven't checked back here in a while. I have been thinking about taking my head unit out just to see how much trouble it is going to be. What all do I need to remove to get it out. I know when I replaced the head unit in my wife's car I had to take out about 5 or 6 different pieces of the dash just to get to the radio. I had instuctions for it, though.

Thanks Larry.

This looks pretty simple, like it should be. I will never understand why they make today's vehicles so that you have to remove ten different things just to get to the one thing you need. At least it looks like Dodge did it right. I will take it out this weekend and let you know the Model #.

Hi Larry,

I removed the head unit today. I was surprised at how simple it was to get it out, even after looking at the website that you mentioned. The model number is P04704386AD. I would prefer to get the factory changer to go with the factory radio. I know that most people want to "upgrade" to aftermarket stuff, but I am very happy with te head unit and think that the changer made specifically for it would be best for me.

Hello,
I had the exact same unit so now I can assure you I know what i'm talking about. Make sure that the cd changer you get, like the one I got on eBay has the round metal seven or eightpin connector at the changer end of the cable that runs from the radio. If it has a square black plastic connector at the cd changer end it will not work !! I have tested this theory with the exact same head unit and had to return the incorrect changer that I had purchased. (Less restocking fee of course)and although it will hook up and not short anything out, your head unit will not operate the changer. You can hear the cd changer power up but the head unit cannot control it's functions. Also be careful about part numbers. sometimes the seller will list the part number on the box but that is for the entire kit with cables and cassette, not just the cd changer itself. I will get back to you with the numbers of the cd changer I ended up with. I upgraded my speakers to FOCAL 165 W which I also got on eBay for a great discount over retail and OH MY GOD !!!!!
It's like the difference between mono and stereo. They sound so great. It practicaly brought tears to my eyes

Hello Again,
Check out these two auctions on eBay
2472034097 and 2472035321 this second one is the exact same unit I have in my Dakota and it worked with the exact same head unit that you have !!!!! eBay item # 3090269416 is an example of what NOT to buy. you can see the difference between the plugs in the pictures.

Good Luck
