Just got the new head unit in. I also bought the wiring harness so that I wouldn't have to hard wire the thing into my truck. When I read the directions for hooking up the harness I come to this section:

On Dodge Dakotas, the front negative leads may be connected with the rear negative leads in the black plug. If the reciever's output is greater than 5 watts per channel RMS then an adaptor will be needed.

I have a 2001 sport. My head unit is definatly higher then 5 W RMS. Have any of you out there with that installed your own head unit needed to use this adaptor, os is this for a different year of truck? I'm installing it next weekend, so I'd like to be able to get it if I need it before i pull the dash apart.

I've never heard of that. A 2001 should use the standard 2x 7-pin Chrysler harness kit. Maybe that was for older Dakotas that had Chrysler's infamous "one-wire" speakers.

Might be because some of the Dak's have a stock amp and a new headunit with more than 5W per channel would drive the amp into a clipping state and blow it up.

I installed a new headunit with a Sosche (sp) wiring kit and it didn't say anything about the problem your listing. However my truck is a 00 and I only used the power off the stock harness, ran all new speaker wires from the new amps I installed.

Try calling the MFG of the kit and ask what's up.

Okay, new questiong. When i look at the install instructions in the Alpine book, it tells you to secure the back of the unit with a strap, which of course is not included. All it is, is a piece of pipe strapping that screws to the back to give some more support. Is this really all that critical to have? Also, anyone know of a good spot to run the ground wire to?

The strap isn't necessary. The shop that do my installs doesn't put them on.

How do you get the dash off to install the stereo, damn seamless dashes.
