Subject: Taking off dash

Message:
I need to change the generic RCA wires that go to the mtx thunderform sub enclosure with competition RCA's due to the alternator noise I'm picking up through the speakers. Problem is...I don't know how to take the dash off to get to the headunit. It's a 2002 Dakota 4x4. I have no use for the $110 service manual...yet. I know it's RCA's that's picking up the engine noise because I can unplug the Ground, Positive, and Remote wires while leaving the RCA's in and the noise is still there, but when I take the RCA's out, the noise is gone. Thanks for any help.

Very easy to do. There are three torx screws at the bottom of the dash. (don't remember what size) and the two phillips screws at the top of the gauge cluster. The bottom three will release one section (don't forget to disconnect the emergency brake release rod.) Once the bottom peice is out (just pull for the tabs to release) you can then start to pull the other section off. This section (in my 2001 Quad Cab) goes from the right side of the head unit to the far left a/c vent. Pop this one off slightly to where you can unplug the two a/c knobs and then unplug the headlight switch. The headlight switch is a PITA. It is easier if you have tilt steering so you can put the wheel in the lowest level and put the truck in 1st gear (on auto's). After that the dash just pops out. Real easy to do after the first time.

the torx at the bottom are t15.

the screws at the top of the gauge cluster might be easier to take off if you have a 5/16" ratchet piece, .. that is the size (or you can use a phillips)

unfortunately i have taken my dash off like 40 times at least. so i am an expert . ha.
