Message:
Im trying to install new front speakers in the front of my 93 dakota, i got the door panel off, but now how do i wire this thing? the wire thats connected to the car has a plastic connector that the factory speaker conviently connected to.. my new speakers have 2 open wires to connect to this... how do i rig this up? Do i cut the entire plastci connector off and twist the wires together?

The easiest and quickest way to wire new speakers would be to go to best buy ( or similiar store) they sell speaker adapters that plug right into the factory harness. Or just cut the ends off but make sure you know which is positive and negative, I'd go with the adapters.

Not if you buy the adapters, you just unplug the factory speakers ,plug the adapters into the factory harness and then the adapter has 2 wires with the right size female plugs to go onto your new speakers,

The adapters is probably the quickest and easiest way to go. If you're running some pretty hot amps, solder(?) and shrink wrap might be better, but depends on how much power you plan on pushing. If you're just using deck power, the adapters should work just fine.

why worry bout the factory connectors, you'll never put those spkrs back in.

Just cut the connectors off and solder the wires to your new spkrs, just make sure you wire the same color plus/minus to both/all speakers. there are several post here with wire colors.

If you are putting in a real quality upgrade system you will wnat to run new speaker wire direct from the amps.

matt, what are you running? Deck or amps? If you're using deck power, go with the adapters. If you're running some amps, then tek is right, you'll want to run new wires from the amp, in which the soldering is the way to go.

I know this will start an argument, but I don't care what everyone has heard I've never seen or heard any difference by using a thicker gauge speaker wire compared to using stock gauge wires. Years ago a well know home audio magazine did a comparison test between the two types of wire and they couldn't prove there was any noticeable difference. also I'd be willing to bet the speaker harness adapters for a 2001 (which are available at stores like bestbuy made by METRA) would work in a 2002 also.

I think your right with the wire size i only think it matters when you run long distances and high wattage like 1000 watts+. That same with electric current the farther you go the more you lose.but in cars + trucks i dont think it matters. As for the connectors i tried best buy and circuit city and their metra connectors would not work i even took the speaker in to show them what i needed they said they never seen any like those maybe i got an orphan.

Anyone looking for the speaker harness adapters I didn't see them on metra's site but found a site that has them for all year dakotas go to this link----http://www.tune-town.com/Cars/stuff/Dodge/Default.htm and look for your year truck, scroll down and you should see the speaker harness adapters. I don't know who makes them but I'm looking into it. I also clicked on the gen 2 trucks and saw that they used a different style plug on the speaker. Hope this helps.

Just another thought.. You can also buy a splice connector from 3M. It is a blue plastic connector, that one side slides over your existing wire, before the stock connector, and a another female slot, that allows you to slide a new wire in. Once wires are aligned, you simply crimp it, and that is it. It can be easily removed, and you still have the stock connector. I have always been a firm believer that you should never cut an adapter. You may not need it now since your upgrading, but when you trade your truck in, you can throw the old stockers back in.
