Hi guys....I just got me a 1998 Dakota and I was wondering how that front panel comes off so I can remove the stock stereo and add a new one. I just wanted to make sure so I don't break it.
Any info would be nice...thanks!

the dash trim around the radio, gauges and all is held in with friction clips, just tilt steering whell all the way down, set parking brake and pull gear shift down to 1st. then pull it off, radio is held in by 2 screws. good luck

Below the steering colum is a smaller piece of plastic (atleast on my 02). You need to pull this off firt. It DOES take some strength to get them off. Once the lower piece of off. You can get the piece around the guages and a/c and head unit off. Just pull and it comes off! And pops back on just the same.

the 98 and 02 dash are totally different. With the 98 you don't have to take off the lower piece under the wheel. if you can't tilt your wheel down, just set parking brake and pull shifter downt to first, this gets the handle out of the way when pulling off the trim piece. hope this help, ttyl.

I have a manual 98 without tilt. All i had to do is use my hands to pull at the cover around the unit. I didn't have any problems at all. The friction clips arent theat tight. The there are twoscrews holding the stereo in place, remove them and get a kit for your truck. I got mine at Checkers for about $20.99. Also dont forget to get a wire harness for it. Read the direction that come with the kit, and remove the tabs that they tell you to with a pair of pliers. Othe than that is should just be plug and play. Have fun...

from the Haynes Manual, DISCONNECT POWER FROM THE BATTERY FIRST(cuz airbags hazard), then take the steering wheels column cover, then take the instrument panel bezel off, while cradling the radio in your arms disonnect antennae and both connectors with both hands. Installation is same just in reverse.

oh when you replace the radio, attach the antennae by going in through the glove box and reaching around.

removing speakers: from Haynes Manual: remove the door panel and unscrew the speaker, unplug the speaker.

On the back of the radio on the 97 you will see a black wire not
the antenna but a small maybe 18g black wire with a square
conactor that is is ground . I suggest going to a auto parts
store and buying a conactor kit to pair it with also a static
instillation sleave. You can use other means strip twist heat
shrink .
