Subject: Rear Panel Removal for 97 CC

I searched and searched for ways to remove the rear panels, but didnt get much help. Finally, i just went in there myself and tried to do it. It isnt as bad as it sounds. First of all, you need to LIFT the cap of the upper seatbelt mount. Notice i said lift, not take off. It is attached at the top by a thin piece of plastic, and it just flips up, go from the bottom and pull up. It requires a star head to be removed. Not 100% sure what size, but if you have a screwdriving/drilling set, you have it. Remove that bolt and off comes the seatbelt. Right above where the seatbelt is there will be a plastic clasp. Slowly pull that from the truck body. Careful here, the fastners arent very sturdy and will break if pulled the wrong way. Pull straight out with some force. Dont worry, they will come. After that fastner is removed, just lightly pull on the panel to get a feel for where the other fastners are there should be 3 fastners. (again, not 100% sure, give or take 1) You dont need to remove the entire panel, just enough space to ge to the screws of the speaker. Once you have gotten to that stage, you can remove the existing speakers. Most speakers will need a mount, unless you want to drill directly into the body..which is very difficult unless you have the right tools. A piece of plywood cut and shaped correctly will do fine. Also, you can just screw one screw into the existing hole although i wouldnt recommend doing this if you plan to do any offroading or things of the like. And if you do just bolt the speaker on with one screw, it will look off-centered through the speaker grill. I ended up just taking the entire panel off again and bought some mounts. If you have stock speakers, there will be a weird attachment from the factory that hooks it up to the stock speaker. Cut that off with some wire cutters, strip the wire to about 1"-1 1/2" then proceed to either wrap the wire around the contacts or sodder them onto the speaker. Wrapping works just fine since soddering will be difficult in such a tight working area. Before you bolt the speaker back in, test it just in case...better safe than sorry. After you bolt the speaker in, try to align the fastners with their holes. Be careful pushing them back in, the panel is very flimsy and will dent and bend very easily leaving unsightly white marks. Using a towel or thick pad, push the fastner EXACTLY straight back into the body. If not perfectly straight, the fastner could break. When all is said and done, replace the seatbelt bolt making sure it is tight (remember, this could save your life someday, so make sure that it is very tight). Take a look at the panel making sure that it is flush and looks acceptable, then bam, you have finshed the back speakers. The front door panel removal can be found all over this site, just run a search for "door panel removal". Repeat for the other side as well. There ya go everybody, any feedback on how the instructions were would be great as this was my first time posting any. Thanks a lot, and good luck. Brent

good info, my 00 was the same, i just went in and explored and took my time. i'll go further as to say that the whole rear panel w/ back seat cushion comes off w/ just fasteners, just make sure to have the uppr/lowr side panels off first. once the back panel is off you can feed the seatbelts through a slit and remove it completely. then you can get to the seat brackets that the actual bottom portoins of the back seat go into(fold up/down) 2 brackets on each seat w/ 2 bolts in each bracket. i took these off to free up some more room and get them out of there. also removed my tooltray w/ the 4 small bolts that are in the cupholders and middle of the tray. that was easy to pull out also.........
