Subject: Upgrading Stock Infinity System
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '97 Dakota CC 4x4, and need some help and recommendations on how to upgrade the speakers and power amp on my stock Infinity system. My system consists of a stock CD/Tape/EQ HU, with stock front component and rear speakers. Both rear speakers are blown. The fronts are o.k., but I still want to replace them.

I've check on Crutchfield, and they show 6-3/4" speakers for both fronts and backs, and Pioneer TS-A1767's speakers as direct replacements. That seems wrong since I have the seperate tweeter/mid combos up front. I have read almost every post on this message board relating to upgrading the stock system, and I gotta tell ya, I'm a little confused with all the different recommendations I've seen. All I want to do is upgrade the amp and speakers, everything else stays the same.

I understand that Infinity Kappa 60.5cs components will fit up front, but may not work with the stock amp because of the amp's power rating and the speaker's inefficiency. I am considering replacing the rears with Infinity Kappa 652.5i 2-ways. Will they have the same problem as the front? Any speaker suggestions please?

If I choose to replace the stock amp, is there a 30W-40Wx4 amp that will directly substitute and fit in the same location in the kick panel? Are there wiring harness issues? If not, how about something real small that will fit under the passenger seat.

Do I have all the info. right on the above? I've read that there are 5-1/4" speakers up front ...

My budget will be less that $500 (hopefully). Would it be best just to go to the audio shop and let them hassle with it?

Please help a fellow stock Infinity system sufferer ...

Thanks in advance!

KGC-
The first question you should ask yourself is: Are you sure that you don't want to upgrade the radio. I know this will add about $200, but the choice you make on the rario will determine the quality of the rest of your system. Many people start with the radio and build on. If you are sure that you want to keep the factory radio, I wouldn't go nuts on the amp and speakers unless you upgrade later. That said, lets say you stick with the factory headunit. I'd suggest that you get 6.5" components since you have the place to mount the tweeters. Components come in a wide range of prices, $100~$300. I'd suggest the access line of focal, but I'm biased. Any 6.5" speaker will fit up front with simple trim ring mounted to existing adapter as long as it's not too deep. I'd forget the rear speakers, all they do is cost more and screw up imaging. A set of amplified comps will get pleanty loud. Save the money and put it towards better components and amp. This way if you do upgrade the radio you won't have crap.
Now for the amp. Since your factory radio doesn't have line level outputs (RCA), the amp you buy should have high level inputs. JBL's power-valve amps, which are very nice for their price, have a feature that turns on the amp when radio outputs have a signal, so no remote wire is needed. This makes for an easy install. If you don't use rear speakers, which I suggested, you will only need a 2 channel amp. If you want to add a sub later, a four channel amp would be more simple to install than two seperate amps. I'd say about 75 watts rms for a component set would be good. I'm using a Blaupunkt PA4100 T-class amp. It is very small for the power it puts out and doesn't produce as much heat. The PA275 (I think) is 2 channel at 75w rms. It might even fit where the old amp was!

If you have any more questions let me know.
Remember: Rear speakers=bad

Good luck, Nate
