Subject: subwoofer fading??
IP: Logged

Message:

System components:

HU: JVC KDSX840 w/ 2 preamp outputs
Amp: Orion 5 channel amp

I was outside earlier today reconfiguring my system in preparation of completeing it soon. I originally had it set up so the amp was in 5 channel mode powering the front, rear and sub.

Now I have it set up so the front speakers are bridged, the rear speakers are run off the HU and the sub is powered by the amp. I have the RCA cables running from the HU front output to the amp front & rear input. The HU's rear output is run to the subwoofer input on the amp.

The problem that I'm having is that when I use the fader on the HU to fade out some of the rear speakers, I'm also fading out the sub.

Is there any way I can avoid this using a 2 output HU or do I need to upgrade to a 3 output HU?

Thanks,
Chuck Robbins

On most Head Unit's with dual pre-outs, one set sends front speaker signals and the second set sends rear speaker signals, this way you obtain true Stereo and are also able use the fader in an amplified system. On some HU with dual pre-outs you can run one set full range and the second set is non-fading for SW. The most flexible HU will have three pre-outs, it is mostly found on "high end" decks costing $300 or more, you will then have front/rear/non-fading SW channels. Without knowing the exact specs on your equipment, it is hard to say if there is a way to hook it up keeping the SW non-fading, my guess is you would have to run the front/rear speakers off the HU and power SW with the amp off the rear pre-out. As an alternate route, you may be able to pick-up an electronic cross-over with a non-fading SW output basically gaining the extra pre-out you now do not have. You could then connect your front/rear pre-outs into that and then onto the amplifier. Since your amp is 5-channel and already has built-in crossovers it may be cost a little more to go with a new HU but you'll have less components and cables to squeeze into your RC.

Hope this helped some.

I have run into this before. I believe that in order to acoomplish what you want, you could use some y - adapters. First, split the front outout so that one set of leads goes to the front channels on your amp only. Then use the second set of leads tied together with the rear outputs with another set of Y's and then run that combined signal to the rear channels of your amp. This way, when you operate the fader, the sub input does not see a loss of signal. It sounds like you have the rear speakers just running off the rear speaker outputs of the deck already, so this setup should work for you.

I just noticed the date for the original post. Oops. Oh well, the connections I have described here should work with most 4 channel amps when being used in a 3-way configuration. I have tried it twice that I can remember and never had a problem.
