I would also like to know....I've had my 87 3.9 AT for three weeks and been tickled pink with it's size and good feed back. I do have one problem though...gas milage sucks wind, I'm at 11-15 mpg when EPA says it is 18/21. I do have a little knock only heard at idle and am wondering if a rebuild is due....it has 119K and uses a quart every 500 miles as far as I can tell. I will be replacing those headers though...there is a lot of kinks that look like an afterthought in the engineering dept. "Make it breath" is what I've learned from past sports cars.

Look in the Mopar Performance catalog. There are a number of pre-magnum 3.9 performance parts available. I currently have a high lift cam, performance heads and headers on my ’88. Though my truck has about 200K on it now, it still runs good. I too burn a bit of oil, but that is to be expected after rebuilding the top end like I have. I have never had the pan of mine so I know the lower end is loose. Not to mention, I have been known to romp on it from time to time.

I am picking up cap and rotor, autolight plugs
KnN filter, Oxegen sensor, Pcv valve, and new ignition coil.....we'll see what happens. All parts looked good but for $80 worth of parts one of em might be it. Partsamerica.com Rocks by the way.....order it-pick it up at local CSK store-.
No tax, great price, all same day....I'm off to pick them up now, I'll report my findings( hopfully +1-2mpg)

Much better.....got 20mpg at 60mph!!!!!
Also found lose or stripped bolts all over and one cracked vac hose, cleaned crankcase inlet filter too. was getting 13-14mpg at 60mph before. Opened up spedometer cable at blew some oil through it with mouth pressure......I can hear my radio now with that rattling gone-try it. Still have some knocking deep in engine under load and high rpm but power is great and milage is better....YeHa

When the thruck is cold the idle is real low in gear, but when it warms up the idle is almost to high. When you shut it off it desels(i guess that's what you call it). The timing has been checked and is fine. Also, when I park on an incline it doesn't want to crank. It's been a good truck with almost 300k and I would like to keep it as long as possible.

Brad: to use the newer grille and lights, you will need to change the radiator core support, bumper, hood, lights, and grille. the fenders can be reused. the newer front has a more rounded shape(sticks out further in the center).

Yeah, to put a front end of a GenII on a Gen I it would take a lot of work. The front end is totally different than our Daks.
And a Gen II cam would not work I am fairly sure. The GenIs are non mag engines. Then GenIIs are Mag engines. Alot different and much more efficient with HP. So I am sure they wouldnt work. But keep looking.

Alittle off mmm3.
GenI 1987-1990 (I4 or V6)(also some ealry are carbed. most are TBI)
GenII 1991-1996, all mag. engines TBI, 4,6,8 cylinder.
GenIII 1997-pres.
Also look at the grill on our daks. First the square grills, then the more rounded w/ flush lights, then the new 3 plane front end.

Superbee...coil was 15-40 bucks...I can't remember---I did a complete tune up for under $100
when I got it last year....
I do have a carbed 87.....witch over the last year I have found that most or all my gas problems are the carb and my heavy foot.
I can get 20mpg at a steady 60 but if in town or driving 75 it drops like a rock to 12ish. I think the tune up gave me an extra 2-3mpg.
I was gettin about 9mpg the first few weeks before doing it.

I'd like to know if only 87's were carbed---If I got an 88 would it be fuel injected?

I too would like to know how you tell a carb from fuel injection other than getting lucky on the emission tag or seeing an injector.....on any car or truck----Any Help?

SuperBee,
Look at your carburator. If it has 2 large injectors just under the air cleaner mount you have injection. Albeit, the TBI. If not you are carburated old style.

I am sure only early 87s had Carbs. Everything after the first few daks has TBI. So explain this to me... If I wanted to buy larger fuel injectors for my 1990 TBI Dak, how many injectors would I have to buy total? I expected 6 for my V6 engine. But are you saying there are only 2, 1 for each TBI barral? Thanks for the help.
Does anyone have the part #s for cap and rotor? I have up graded my entire ignition with a Jacobe Omni Mag system, 8.5mm Jacobs wires, and autolite 3923s. But I am wondering if my cap and rotor need to be replaced. No idea as to when they last were.I though only newer Daks had PCV valves. Help here please... Thx
Joe E.
