I hear from other folks that have that happen it
is usually due to the factory not putting in the
limited slip diff. additive for the rear end!!!
You might want to take it to the dearler and have
them check it or replace the fluid and make sure
they put in the additive!!!!

Hey Bob,

Have you checked this on your Auto O/D tranny yet?

TSB: 21-20-99 NOV 99 46RE Transmission Shift Quality Improvement

Get that rear-end checked for noise at the dealer as well...(and stop eating so many beans). ;)

They've got a bunch of transmission TSB's for the '93 models. (Even a Trans-Cooler Cold Temp Bypass...makes ya wonder if Dodge knew something back then about the cold climates.)

I will check out your answer's...my son can get me the TBS fix from his PC at work.I had a 355 gear set put in my Mustang a few years ago and it howled after that job...between the gears, full pump, exhaust nose, it makes for a crazy ride. PS. hate to deal with car dealers, but I will take it back to the Dodge boys soon.

Bob,

You can also drain the rear diff fluid and put in 75 / 140 fluid. The person who installed my 3.90 posi suggested me using this (along with the lsd additive). I live in a cold weather area and no problems to date.

99dak- I don't want to do anything yet...I'm going to get the nose on paper from the dealer first. It pisses me of that some one didn't put it together right at the factory.Must have been built after lunch.

I have a 93 and mine made a horrible R/E noise on accel. I took the rear end apart, replaced all the bearings(everything looked ok) & made sure it was set up right when put back together. The noise on accel is gone but now I have a whine when coasting. Any suggestions??

Instead of trying to figure out the problem with the rear-ends of our 98 to 02 dakota & durangos. We need to send a complaints to there headquarters. Maybe they do and recall and we stop paying $1500.00+ to get our trucks fixed. It sound like and manufactors error, because there are alot of people with these truck complaining about the SAMETHING. REAR-END WHINING NOISE!!!

My rear end had a little noise also, but that went away when I switched over to synthetic.

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 4.7L, the predecessor was a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 5.2L manual. The 1997 had 2 rear ends put in it. Other than that, I experienced no problems with it until about 92,000 mi, when my RF wheel bearings decided to let loose. I was about a 1/2 mile from the dealership and decided to trade it in on the 2002. BIG MISTAKE. Rear end noise that can be heard over a 1 in, 2 out, Flowmaster, possible bad seals in the power steering that sings to my neighbors as I go up the street, wind noise and air leaks in the door panels, loud servos in the tranny, door panels squeak with the speakers, seat belt squeaks and does not retract when you lean forward, brakes are horrible (have been adjusted twice), and when you let off the gas on a turn, the drive train catches up and whacks you in the back-side. Other than that, I have no complaints. Dodge just says thank you for your concern and please contact your dealer. What a bunch of hooey. I have a job to go to. The Dodge dealership told me it was normal and actually compared me to a soccer mom used to driving a mini-van. Anyone know any good class-action lemon-law attorneys?

My 98 ex-cab 5.2 5 speed does the exact same thing. The part that burns me up is I also have a 75 full size with the same rear and I installed a used posi unit in it with used bearings and races (all looked fine), and set the back lash myself and I put 60.000 miles on it so far and it is quiet. As far as the 98 dak. I am sure the rear is as it left the factory or it may have been repared at some point at the dealer and with all the training they have they could'nt get it right.
