Hello, I am considering getting a 1991 Dakota LS 4x4 Regular Cab, Automatic Tranny with a 5.2 V8, 75,000 miles. It has all the options available power everything. And almost no rust the dealer is asking around 5 grand which is in my budget. I was wondering what kind of mileage people usually get with this kind of pickup. Also i have been told to be very careful of the transmissions that seem to got to hell. I am currently considering giving up my Ford Ranger which i have had for three years and have never had to do anything but change oil and i have well over 130k on it. please reply thanks

I bought a 1990 dakota 4x4 with all options and it had 110,000 miles on it. I paid $3000 for it
and i had to rebuild my trans because of my reverse gear. Other then that I had no problems with the truck.

Buy that truck before it slips out of your fingers.
I had a 91 318 2x4 and I regret ever getting rid of it!

I own a 1991 dakota 2x4 318 V8 and love it. There is a problem thet may pop up, for instance, the Ignition Module may fail, and it is expensive unless you can find a remanufactured one. The mileage isn't all that great, and the fuel gauge has gone haywire. I'm in the process of having it painted, add a bedliner, tonneau cover. Good power and good ride with 60 series tires and American Racing wheels. Guess I do love the truck...

I like my truck but had to rebuild tranny reverse went out, Now everthing is fine.
The 1991 is pre Magnum with a TBI. Not near the power you get from a Magnum eng.Ive read on the porformance board that porting the tbi helps power gain a lot. Theres not a lot of mods for this set up. Im about to rebuild boring it out .030" adding a cam, porting the TBI and adding headers. 3" Body lift with 32s.
Thats about all i know to do and it will work for me. GOOD LUCK

I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota Sport 318 Ext. Cab 4X4.
With 31X10.5 tires and a custom paint job, and lots of little mods. I love it tonnes!! Great looking truck and lots of fun. My only problem is the fuel mileage, you really have to account for it, it's a big truck, and it guzzles gas accordingly. But i reccomend it to you, go for it!

The last 3 months my dodge dakota has been slipping between 2nd and 3 rd gear until it warms up. Had a transmission line put on about 2 weeks ago as it was leaking.Changed the fluid but still slips.

I have a 91 318 ext. cab, and I love it. Don't worry about what people say about the pre-magnum thing, it still has lots of power. It's a mid size truck and even though it's not a magnum engine remember that it still has the V8 under the hood. And from what I've read through time on these boards alot less problematic than these so called awesome 4.7's. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.
Steph.

Hi guys. You said the fuel gauge goes haywire, is that like mine where it shows totally empty when you fill it to the top then it goes to full after the gas goes down a bit? Also, what do you guys reccomend for performane options on my 318? Any way I can change it over to a manual (I hate automatics). Thanks much.

Alex

I'v gota '91 dakota,4x4,5.2L with 178K ms. that runs well enough to scare. I've recently experienced brake failure due to oxidation of the steel lines and while replacing the brake lines, pulled the bed to sandblast. Blasted the frame, under the bed and all associated components. Undercoating on, the question remains to go ahead with the engine rebuild or wait till it blows? I've been on the lookout for headers...headers anyone???,help me find some headers...please...

Carl,
Drive it 'till the wheels fall off!! HAHA. I would drive it untill the engine lets go, and then rebuild. You will never know how far you could have gone if you rebuild it before it blows.

I saw some headers for the 91 dak on eBay yesterday. I would have bought them if I had the money. You might try there.

Hey, has anyone had their speedometer go out yet? When mine got to 75,000 miles, it put on a show that would rival the supernatural. It bounced from 0-125, went back to my speed of 70 mph and then did the backwards spin. It was cool, except for the fact that now it is gonna cost me. Now i drive using the Tachometer. I've got 178,000 on it now. It makes it exciting to meet Jonny Law on the road.HAHAHA

Lots of problems but the most recent being it sputters and almost stalls and then it seems to catch. New compter installed in Nov., 2003, oil gage keeps dropping, when you shut it off it comes back up. Any answers to these problems would be appreciated - costing me a fortune in repairs.
