I need to know if cranking my torsion bars on my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 will damage or lessen the life on some driveline parts. I have read some posts that say it will and some that say it wont. My 4x4 sees some light to medium offroad duty a couple times a month, but its mostly a daily driver back and forth to work. I am seriously condering cranking the bars for a nice level look in the front end as opposed to the slanted down in front look it has now.

No it will not harm anything. I worked for dodge dealers for 8 years. I have done this many times even on friends trucks. One friend drove his truck another 55,000 miles then had to change the idler arm, that is with a little over 145000 miles and that was the original arm.

Is a front end alignment necessary after a torsion bar lift?

suggested but not nesassary. What it does, is throw the caster off which helps the steering wheel to return to center.

I have the torsion bars cranked up on my 88 and I don’t entirely agree with Matt’s statements. My bars were cranked prior to installing the suspension lift and there is a noticeable increase in the amount of the tension on the lower ball joints which does slightly decrease their overall service life. Same with the CV boots. I replace ripped boots every couple of years. Remember that you are changing the geometry of the front suspension. Front-end components were designed to be within a certain range of movement. Moving out side that range, may adversely affect their performance. Also, it is highly recommended you align the front end after cranking the bars. The front tires will wear poorly if you do not. When I lifted the truck, I replaced all of the front end parts as well as the torsion bars. Prior to installing the Micky Thompsons I have now, the Dunlops I had, cupped very badly within several thousand miles. I have some instructions on how to crank the torsion bars on my webpage. Here is a quote from the page.

“Park the truck on what you know is a level surface and make sure all four tires are equally inflated. Open both doors and place a carpenter's level on the driver's door jamb. Using a 13/16 socket, tighten the anchor bolt on the driver's side until the door jamb is level. Now this is where I take an extra step. Some people say you should count the number of turns of the bolt and repeat the same number of turns on the passenger's side. This only lifts the front of the truck evenly. The object here is to level the truck, not only front to rear but also left to right. Because springs will settle over time and will do so at different rates, torsion bars that were evenly adjusted at the factory, may not be even a few years later. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from the ground to the frame of the truck, just behind the front bumper. Also measure the distance between the upper control arm and the upper bump stop. With the level in the passenger's side door jamb, tighten the passenger's side anchor bolt until the jamb is level. Repeat the frame and bump stop measurements. Tighten or loosen the passenger's anchor to match the measurements from the driver's side. This will ensure the truck is level left to right. NOTE: Cranking up the torsion bars will change drive line angles and will increase the strain on front end components. Ball joints, CV-Axles and such will have a reduced service life. Also, the truck will require a front end alignment to keep the tires from wearing unevenly.”

Yes, you can crank them to get it level, then go somewhere and let them put it on the alignment rack, if it needs to be aligned then get it done, if it dosent then you are in luck.
