I notice that alot of people have front end problems. Mine pops during turns while pressing the brakes. Steering wheel makes makes a pop when going over light bumps, and also squeeks while driving. My front end doesnt feel tight, It seems like it is coming apart. My friend has a 97' and his front end is fine, solid feel over bumps and turns. I am willing to do the work myself, but i dont know what my problems are. The dealership says my front end is fine. HELP.

I had someone look at them, he said there ok but to small for such a big truck. If they are bad would that explain all of my problems?? I will change them, upper or lower ball joints ???

Frank,

Before you go out and change them, have the dealer look at the steering column. There's a TSB out on this for a "popping" noise. Don't know off hand what it is...but I do know that it's there.

I have a body lift, and wondered if they would mess with the steering column with it cut.

What did you cut? Or are you talking about the spacer that you have to install inbetween the rack and steering rod?

I had to cut the steering column, And extend the shaft with a 3" spacer. All of the body lifts are that way.

WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS I'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE A 98 DAKOTA CLUB CAB 4X4. I GET A KNOCKING NOISE WHEN APPLY THE BRAKES AT LOW SPEEDS,A DIP IN THE ROAD, OR PULLING INTO A HIGH EDGE DRIVEWAY. I'VE TAKEN IT TO TWO DEALERSHIPS. ONE SAID THE BALL JOINT WERE OKAY, AND THEY HEARD THE NOISE, BUT COULDN'T LOCATE IT, AND WANTED THE TRUCK FOR A COUPLE DAYS AND WARRANTY MIGHT NOT COVER IT. SO I TOOK IT TO A TIRE DEALER FOR A ALIGNMENT. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS BOTH OF MY LOWER BALL JOINTS AND IF YOUR TRUCK IS UNDER WARRANTY IT SHOULD BE COVER. SO I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IN THE NEIGHBERING TOWN. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WASN'T ANY PROBLEMS WITH BALL JOINTS. THEY SAID THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM LOOSE BODY MOUNTING BOLTS. HORSE SHIT! I WAS NOW PISSED. I THEN TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER TIRE PLACE TO GET A ALIGNMENT CHECK. THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING, THAT THE FIRST TIRE DEALER SAID. YOUR LOWER BALL JOINTS NEED REPLACING. SO I HAD THEM DO IT. ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS DODGE SUCKS! THEY DON'T HOLD UP TO THERE PRODUCT OR THERE WARRANTY. I THINK THEY GO BUNCH OF CRACK POTS FOR MECHANICS. I TELL WHAT. I HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M FIGHTING DODGE TO GET THE MONEY FOR THE REPAIRS. AND SINCE I HAD A (NON) DODGE REPAIR SERVICE DO THE REPAIRS. I DON'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM ANYMORE. GO FIGURES. GO FIGURES A CRACK ADDICT COULD FIGURE THAT PROBLEM OUT. BUDDY I HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK.
