Subject: sub box?

Message:
I was thinking about putting a stealth sub box in my '99 Dak Sport club. Just trying to get opinions from people who have already installed one. Debating between the MTX Thunderform and the JLaudio equivalent. Any info would be appreciated!

dude,

i did both. got the subwoofer box and the MTX Thunderforms. i found out that the sub box took way too much room from the back. there were some days when i didn't know i would need space.

with the Thunderforms you have all the room you want. and with the smaller enclosed space you get a more bass sound. jus my 2 cents!!!

Thanks and MAHALO,
Scotty

Hey Scotty, I've been looking at replacing the rear sub in my truck a well but also need to keep the seats free for my kids. Do the Thunderforms fit behind, underneath, or in the space between the seat and backrest?

Thanks

How much room does the Dakota have under the back seat. I dont have a Dakota yet but right now I have a 10" JL audio sub in the back of my CRX. And hopefully that'll fit in the back of a club cab under the seat. Do you guys know if it'll fit?

Thanks

Hey Bernd, the thunderform box by mtx replaces the storage tray under the back seat. The box still has the cup holders and a place for the jack, but you lose the little storage area behind the driver's seat. The JLaudio equivalent uses one 8" sub and the box fits in that storage area I was just talking about and allows access to the jack. Check out [mtxaudio.com] to see pictures of the thunderform. [jlaudio.com] is the other site to check out.

Cool Deal...took a look at the site. Looks like a new addition to the Dak. (That old Kenwood box is realy getting annoying now.)

Thanks,

Hey Scotty, could you tell me a little more about the sound quality like how tight and crisp it is or anything else you could say in comparison to other subs? Didn't know if it would be better to try and get an unloaded box and put a pair of JL's or another brand that works well in smaller cubic feet boxes.

Have you looked into Kickers. They are supposed to have a really good sub. Kickers don't need a lot of room they have good sound with less air, meaning smaller box. I'm going to look into them somemore myself I should have no problem fitting a 10inch sub and box into my regular cab.

I had a set of MTX Thunder 10" Subs in my old Camaro and my buddy had a set of Kicker 10" subs in his GTO. They didn't sound much different to me. But that was also 8 years ago.

Thanks for the input guys. Been doing some more checking and think i'll probably just go with the MTX and if i don't like the sound i'll try a different pair.

Thanks,

The new kickers are really good one sub can vibrate the cars around you. They also came out with a new sub thats square but stay away from it the voice coil on it blows out in about a month.

I made my own sub box to fit underneath the back seat. I had to take out the hinges that connect to the rear seat for the space and take out the black tray also. Oh yeah taking out the rear tray was a real bitch with out damaging or scraping the interior. You cannot even tell that I have a pair of 10" rockford subs in the truck because of the clean look of the box with the matching color of carpet that I found. The box turned out to be 1.48 cubic feet and is sealed. Ideal is 1.5 for the subs. The only difference from the factory is that rear seats are now 1.5 inches higher. I had to do this to get enough volume in the box, but it is now more comfortable to sit in the back with the seats being a bit higher. Also I had the stereo tested and the subs hit 128Db with a Rockford Punch 55.2 amp which puts out about 110W bridged.

I have been involved with many stereo competions in the past and I can tell you that Kicker woofers are just poor-man speakers. Spend the few extra $'s and get either Rockford Fosgate or JL speakers. Most stereo enthousiats know the difference is hands down.

I had the MTX Thunderforms in my Dakota, they fit right under the seat and they are great, the only problem i had was a place to put the amp. I ended up taking out my seats and mounting the amp right underneath the passenger seat. Overall it was great. I still had the normal room available in the backseat and no one knew that i had a system in my truck!
