Any idea why we have to turn O/D off when not on the freeway?

Is there anyway to have it default to "Off" and then turn in "On" when I drive freeways?

Not necessary to turn off the OD when not on the freeway. You could leave it on forever and your truck would be no worse off than turning it on and off. The only thing that I have noticed by turning mine off is that the torque converter locks up in 3rd gear at about 32mph at light throttle...with the OD on, the torque converter waits until I'm in OD and traveling about 42mph (very light throttle) before locking up. Interestingly enough, 32mph is the slowest speed when mine will shift into OD if left on, so my thinking is that at 32mph and light throttle, the computer will try for better gas mileage by either shifting into OD or by locking up the converter in 3rd gear (if OD is off). Looked at that way, you will probably get FRACTIONALLY better mileage in a steady cruise at 35mph with the OD off and no torque converter slip than you would in OD and some converter slip at the same speed...mpg will almost always be slightly better with no slippage than with the slip of an unlocked converter, but the downside of a locked converter is a less responsive feel to the gas pedal.

All that having been said, do whatever makes you feel better.
