I own a 2000 dakota quad cab. I changed my oil the other night and noticed a lot of foamy condensation build up in the oil filler cap and tube. The truck has a 4.7 v-8, has anyone out there had or heard of this problem???? I am a service manager for toyota and suspect that I have blown headgaskets. Please tell me that I am over reacting.

I have heard and seen that problem but not on one that new. Most older Chrysler motors do that, like Jeeps and old dodge trucks, but the newest thing ive ever seen it in was a 95.

I have never heard of it being a head gasket though, its just one of those Mopar things you just learn to live with.

THE PROBLEM IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CAMSHAFT.DODGE REMOVED A CENSOR TO HELP IMPROVE FUEL EFFICIANCY.THE WAY THEY ARE TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM IS PUTTING A VENT ON THE OIL FILL CAP.THEY ARE CLAMING THAT IT IS A CONDENSATION FROM THE OIL.

Bill are you the guy, that posted the part number last week?I could not find that post.I looked at a Liberty 3.7L today, the oil fill faunal has a molded in baffle. This Liberty has been driven all over the place and there is not a drop of foam in it!The dealer is going to send me the parts...I sure will be checking it out.Al they need to do is put the dam filler back on the valve cover. My opinion.

Bob
PS- keep in touch with us on it.It's bullshit that there is that much foam in mine.

I have a 99 Dak and only have 37,000 miles on it. it has had the heads replaced due to factory defect and now my trany is slipping and dealer can not find anything wrong with it. I think if you get a truck like dodge you shouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff. my first prob started att 678 miles. I am seriously thinking of doing the lemon law on mine. but I love the truck and it does great in the snow and ice when it is running good, I live in Alaska so I have tested it on the roads up here. any questions plz contact me or any fixes PLZ let me know.

Bob,
No, I am not the one who posted the part numbers. I agree with your statement to put the filler tube back in the valve cover. That would eliminate the foaming. I am thinking of insulating the filler with one of those starter wraps sold to keep heat off of chevy starters. It might keep the heat in.

Bill I called the dealer about the foam coming back because my fix was done 4 weeks ago. The dealer said to give it some more time that the foam has to work itself out. I don't know how true this is but I'll be keeping an eye on it. If its still there in a few weeks then I will be calling the dealer again to find out what their new excuse will be.

I have a 1998 dodge dakota. I just recently took it in to get the oil changed and they said I have a bad head gasket. The person changing the oil said to take it to the dealer to see if it is a factory defect. Does anyone out there know or have had similar problem.

I own a 2000 Dakota 4x4 CC w/ the 4.7L engine. I have had the same problem with my truck for approx. 20K miles. The truck currently has 60k miles and is in the dealer right now due to the sludge. Dodge has put a bulletin out stating that the sludge buildup is a normal occurence and if desired, a baffled oil fill spout and oil cap can be installed. This isn't considered necessary to them though, it'll just keep the sludge out of site. I'm concerned about this being a "normal condition" though because everything I know about engines tells me that sludge and moisture condensation within the engine are bad. I don't want this to be a problem they stall me on until my warranty runs out and my engine seizes. I checked with a Jeep dealer whether they had a similar occurrence in their 4.7 V8's and he said he's never come across it. If anyone know's any more concrete info regarding this sludge/condensate, and their potential effects on my engine, I'd appreciate the response. Thanks everyone, this is my first time posting.

There is a new product on the market for repairing headgaskets, it is called Thermalweld.
The product is 100% gauranteed, but can only be purchased through a Thermalweld dealer or a franchize. I am a dealer in Michigan, and I personally have repaired 15 vehicles. The company is very new but has hundreds of testomonials on successful headgasket repairs.

I have the same problem. 2000 Dakota Sport 4.7L. Tons of foam inside the oil filler cap and on the fill tube. This time I noticed a creamy substance in the oil after draining. I do not see the foam at every oil change. 34,000 miles. I also have a trany that slips. Seems to be the worst when cold. The dealer says it is normal. I also hear a ticking sound when I put the trany into drive. The noise goes away after it is fully engaged. Trail Dodge in MN does not seem to care about any of these issues. They treat them as normal operations of the truck.

My 2000 Dakota SLT Quad Cab with the 4.7 ltr engine suddenly flahed "check gauges" on dash and by the time I looked at gauges to notice I lost all oil pressure my truck had stalled and had a difficult time steering to the shoulder of road. After having it towed to local dodge dealer and informed it would cost me $220-$300 to find problem, I was told the next day it was from SLUDGE in oil. I would have to have a new engine.
Last winter when I had a transmission flush and oil change done and noticed the Sludge in oil fill tube, the service manager told me it was common due to a "Design Flaw" and it was condensation build up. I was told i could buy a "Baffle Kit" for about $30. plus labor, was shown a internal memo from Dodge to dealerships. It stated it would "REDUCE" condensation build up. I refused to pay for the part as if Dodge knew of the problem they should fix. I was told I would be ok... it wasn't a big deal and would not hurt anything. I was told it only happends in the winter months when temperature was cold.
Now,the dealership denies any knowledge of this type of problem and after I told them I refused to put a used motor in a truck their defect ruined, the service manager said he would talk to the regional rep to get me taking care of right, and they would call me back. It has been over 1 week and I still have heard nothing. I did e-mail Dodge to which I was denied any help.
