 Subject: louder exhaust??

how can i make my exhaust louder with it still beign street legal. i have flowmasters on it with dual outs but im not sure which ones they are. how could i find this out, they were on it when i bought it. i heard if you flip the round thing on top of the air filter upside down, you get more air in which makes it louder, i already have a k&n also.

1) Flip the housing-cover and on our trucks you get crap sucked into the engine. That works on older engines.
2) Air-intake doesn't make mine a bit louder, but it adds MAD power and mileage. I removed my entire stock intake (the hose and the housing) and replaced it with a $25 open-element chrome housing I got at Pep-Boys. Already payed for itself ten times over in gas savings.
3) Look at the mufflers. Crawl under your truck and see what's on them.
4) Make it louder?! That's so REDNECK/HICK! I mean you're not asking, "How can I get more performance from my exhaust?" or "How can I change my exhaust system so I go faster?", but you're asking how to make the damn thing louder! We solved that problem back home ourselves. When the cops ran the idiot rednecks out of town after dark because they had loud/no exhaust-systems and they chose to drive around our place in the country, we shot out their tires with rifles. I hope somebody does that to you if you're just going for the loudest piece of crap in town.

Whatever, I explained everything then made a valid point. Only rednecks, hicks and uneducated idiots enjoy loud noises that no longer sound like a decent vehicle. If you want it loud, disconnect the exhaust behind the O2 sensor on your exhaust-line. That'll be loud as hell, and sound just as crappy as somebody farting into a mega-phone. These performance exhaust setups are for performance, not to 'make it loud'. You want loud, cut that sucker off and drive without an exhaust-pipe. Just don't be upset when people stare at you like you're not normal, or when you get yelled at for having such a noisy POS, even if the vehicle is in mint condition.

why in gods name would you want it loud? .. a low rumble sounds like theres somthiing under the hood ... when people make them loud they sound like want somthing under the hood ... IMO .. if its got Flowmasters KEEP THEM I wish I had FlowMasters! People spend good money for them! Good God man .. have some pride in your ride!

Exactly. The hicks from where I grew up would get rangers and be all envious of the bigger F150s, Dakota V8s, and other larger engines, so instead of getting an exhaust-system (which sounds horrid on a V6) they'd cut the pip off just behind the cat or just behind the O2 sensor. Hell, they did that to a few four-bangers as well. Made them loud, but they sound like azz.
Now you on the other hand, have a sweet setup to begin with. You have what the hicks WISH they had. Keep it and be the envy of those uneducated freaks. When you roll by with a deep growl, they're gonna' KNOW you have some power. However if you ride by with the damn thing farting they're just gonna' think it's another POS.

thanks, seph. ill try that open-element. i guess that performance is more important than sound, but i wasnt talking about the fart sound that all the stupid s10's make around here. more like that loud sweet growl. but i guess i would just have to have a bigger engine in order to get that, maybe a 440 hemi or something. one day.....

That growl is a low tone, not the high "I want my truck to sound like Nascar" setup. I am putting a series70 Flowmaster on my 5.2L V8 for that effect. It's a low rumble, kind of like a woofing sound. Like thunder, I guess. That's much more intimidating that something that sounds like a go-cart on steroids.

Does your duels exit the rear or the side? If its out the rear it will be quieter to you while in the cab. You want it louder, go to duels out the sides.

Hey hey, I'm a hick, but I don't want my truck sounding loud. I'd rather go for that deep deep roar that says I got some f**king power in this beast. You don't want a loud exhaust, unless you have a POS and then it dun matter. You got your nice dak, make it respectable.

i want my truck to have a little more rumble when its idling my friends all got z71's and there loud as f*** sittin still and mines quiet i have flowmaster duals but i was wonder if there is anythin i could do to make it juss a little louder

I have a single 2.5 in single 2.5 out flowmaster 40 series muffler on my 00 4.7L auto 4x4 dakota (ohh yeah and a 3.5" stainless tip) and I honestly think its too quiet too.. It has that low rumble but it doesn't have that loud crackle I payed big money to get out of it (and didn't receive) I had flowmasters on everything I else I own and they're all super loud.. I think maybe I'd be looking into a high flow cat (preferably a magnaflow or dynatech) I put those onto my old chubby 4x4 and it made the biggest difference switching from the factory cats, they almost sounded like there was no cats on there at all.. it was fantastic! As for me, I'm going to invest in the smog legal true dual exhaust system from GSM, I heard spintech mufflers recently on a chevelle and they were great! Any exhaust system that Y's off will be quieter than it could be! Plus I like my racket in stereo! Two different happily headered and exhausted banks breathing out into the open air... ahh what a sound!

Sephiroth and thebutler4 obviously dont appreciate trucks... so what if he wants it loud why do you have to start bashing him for that?... We drive midsize pickups... its not a F,n luxury truck. Loud exhaust just means he wants to show off his truck a little bit... It always makes ya feel better when your revving at someone and you know your MUCH louder... and im sure that 70 series muffler ya put on is good for about 5 hp. so you must be real into performance haha... Now if you want it loud cut the muffler, leave the cat alone, and put a turn down pipe (3.99 at autozone) on. Trust me, its loud... My stereo system is loud too, does that mean its bad? I'll take that back to the store too and let them know its much too loud. i prefer to ride in my truck in complete silence hahaaha

I have a Magnaflow single in dual out (exiting behing each rear wheel). I love the way it sounds and get compliments on it frequently. Has that nice V8 rumble, but is not to loud or annoying on long trips.

do what i did to my dakota (yes it is my old beater, 1990 rust bucket with mudders) put in a set of cheap shorty headers, and a cut-out after the y pipe
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars
