Subject: Is the 4.7 a good engine?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have just ordered my dakota through the dealership, nowhere was there one with all the options I wanted. I ordered a 2002 QC, lsd, 3.92, auto 4.7. I see all these posts comparing the 4.7 to the 5.9. Obviously the 5.9 is somewhat faster. I opted for the 4.7 to help a little on mpg. I hear a lot of smack talked on the 4.7. It doesn't have enough torque, this and that. Regardless of its comparison to the 5.9, isn't still a good engine? Also, the 2002's come with a mutlispeed trans instead of the 4 speed used on the 5.9, think this will help much? Any input would be appreciated, I can't wait for this truck to be shipped!

SO far in my dak I would say yes.
Sure the low end torque is a bit wanting but once you wind it up, it goes like a 747 on takeoff!
26K on it and so far NO problems (the rest of the truck is another matter for another time)
I run mobil 1 5w30 and a WIX filter. I can hit 19 MPG on the highway (3.92 axle) and run about 14 in town in the summer.

As for the auto, well, some like it I don't. I went round and round with my dealer on the shift quality and finally found a TSB, printed it out, took it in and told them either fix the harsh shift points or replace the f**** tranny! They reporgrammed the TCM and it shifts better I will admit, but nowhere near as good as mopar trannys of years past. (and yes, I have driven a few)
Plus, it needs fluid and filter changed at 36K and every 36K thereafter. Two filters are required (thus raising the cost of service) so no, if I had it to do over again, I would have gone for the stick shift in a heartbeat.
ANyway, thats my two cents......you can talk to others and they will rave about the 45RFE......in my opinion, its an example of engineers with WAY too much time on their hands.

32K and no problems yet. I've been very satisfied with the torque and mpg as far as trucks go. I just installed a 360airintakez and picked up some good low end power.

Yes, they are.

I have a 2001 QC Auto, It is a lighter engine than the 5.9, as for the gas milage , I dont think its a huge difference. There are not as many Mods for the 4.7 as there are for the 5.9, but again its a new motor. I have about 18k on mine and it runs just fine. It has plenty of power, and in some cases enough to get you into deep doo doo in the wrong situation.

As for the Transmission, I have the multispeed and I love it. I do a lot of in town driving and it really makes the grade. Every once in a while I get challanged at the light, but its VERY rare that someone gets ahead of me. Its fast for a truck and then some, I am sure you will be more than happy with it!

The 4.7 is a great engine. Paired with the multi-speed automatic it makes for a great drivetrain. Add a full-time transfer case and it makes for a fantastic truck.

I've got 64,000 miles on mine without any problems. Earlier this week I hauled 1200 pounds of lumber. A year ago I pulled an 18-wheeler back up onto the road. And I've driven off-road trails that Jeep guys said I couldn't. Then I drove home on the interstate at 80 mph in complete comfort.

Yeah, you got a good truck.

Nearly 50K, with the multispd trans. Nothing but good driving. Mods, muffler, poor-boy intake (ram-air), soon to get a 70mm TB, and IAT adjuster.

Ill admit that I was a little skeptical about the 4.7 when I had my ole '98 cc 4x4 318. But soon i decided to go from red neck to speed racer. Since I liked Dakotas already I decided to look at used r/t's... But then I remembered you could get a 4.7 with a 5spd. So i researched the ole 4.7 vs 5.9 thing and decided mainly that the 4.7 5spd would be my choice. Now I'm very glad that I made that choice. The 4.7 is very smooth compared to the 318 I had. It seeems to have all power the 318 had and all the power it didnt have in the right places. As far as durablilty goes, well that has yet to be thuroughly tested. So far its been great, no probs with the truck or with annoying ricers at the traffic lights :)

I always remember how smooth I thought my buddy's Integra was at high RPM, and this motor rivals it. Not as much bottom end as some larger V8s but the HP comes on from 2800 to 5000 RPM. I have the 5spd so I can make up for the low end, so don't know about the auto. But as for reliability, you shouldn't worry. 27,000 so far and no problems. Definitely open up the intake though, you'll notice a big difference. Also, I've been averaging 18.1 mpg since I got it, and I do a lot of city driving with a lead foot.

Yes it is! I have a 4.7 and very proud of the way it runs. It eats a 5.9 for breakfast, lunch, and supper. I am very suprise in this little truck. People don't believe my factory 4.7 is 3 seconds behind a cobra. For more details get back with me. DAKOTABABY02

I've had a Dakota quad cab since June, and my brother purchased an extended cab. We both have the automatics, with 4.7 engines. The first time we compared notes, the only thing we agreed on that didn't seem right, was the shifting from first to second. Most of the time it is a smooth transfer, but at times it can be hard. I have recently noticed that it will sometimes do it down shifting from second to first. Has anyone else experienced this? My brother just had his in the shop and they did some kind of "programming upgrade" Too soon to determine the results.

you'll be very happy with this engine. Although I had a fuel injection problem at 7k, its been running great since. Opening up the restrictive exhaust and intake is a must. Email with questions.

I have a 01 CC 4.7 auto, and have also experienced the clunky shifts, seems to happen every time i accelerate to 20 mph, and let off the throttle. More so at lower speeds, shifts smoother when you run it out a lil harder.

Anyone have some 1/4 mile times or 0-60 for a 3.92 equiped 4.7 QC? Auto i think. This guy at school started talking stuff today, and I want to know if I'll get walked or not. I have a '95 Chevy Reg Cab 1500 with a 350, ported and polished heads, Hooker Supercomp Headers, custom bent true duals... i dont have a couple things that I should according to the clean air act, and I've got an intake. I have a 3/4 drop and 3.08 gears delivering that GOOD 1 wheel peel. But I did have 204 hp and 297 lb ft of torque at the wheels before the heads.

Dakota boy guessed that he had 270 hp or so, and i found that the 4.7 makes 235 and about 300 lbft of torque at the crank, so i think i can get him. but that 3.92 LSD kinda scared me.

Etuck,

I have experienced the same with my 02 Dakota QC with the 4.7L engine. Lik you said its only when you let off the gas does it shift hard. Sounds like a common thing.

I used to own a'01 2x4 Dakota club/cab pick-up truck equiped with a OHC 287 Powertech engine (badged as magnum). Its not a bad engine but it does have bad habbit to stall out at idol speed. I think they might have improved the engine by changing the codes.

I now have a '94 318 powerd Dakota with 160K miles on it. And the engine doesn't miss a beat. Cranked it up this morrning in 8 degree weather and she just fired right up.

Now who said Chrysler couldn't build good engines?

I got a 01' QC 4x4 25,000 miles on it when it was new had a clunk when it shifted gears got that fixed, I agree with the rough shifts at low rpm, but put a little foot on it it smooths right out factory supposed to have 235 hp I added bigger throttle body, air raid intake,KN airfilter, custom dual exhaust, moved the Iat, autolite plugs, 180 thermostat, and cannons (I just love the rumble) and it will rev better than the 318,6000 no problem.

The 45 RFE is a big improvement compared to what I got. 46RH. This tranny shift to much and sometimes stay's stuck in second.

If I ever get another Dakota. Its going to have a HO V8 (287) and mated to a 5 speed auto or manuel transmission.
