Subject: I am going crazy!! Please help

hey guys, I have a '92 v8 auto 4x4 130k. Besides the fact that the tranny clunks when shifting, the engine noise keeps getting louder and running rougher and loss of power. I have changed the fuel filter, air filt., plugs, wires, pvc valve, cap/rotor, and have added fuel injector cleaner. An old man owned it before me and probably never changed the belly pan gasket, so thats next. Will that make a big diff? Is the cat or 02 sensor the cause? How can I tell? There is also a slight pining or ticking I can hear from inside the cab near the fire wall. he in cab engine noise is driving me nuts! Could the crapy tranny be the culprit? ABOVE ALL! the transfer case shifter is rattleing like crazy, I removed the knob and it still rattles, as soon as I grab it, the rattle stops. how can a solid metal rod rattle??

On the engine side of things, the intake belly pan gasket is a likely culprit. The O2 sensors is probably in dire need of change. Either, or both can cause poor performance. You mentioned increased noise. You may have a leaking exhaust gasket, possibly a cracked manifold.

I second what gen1dak said. The plenum gasket is gone.

gut the cat... sounds clogged. The plenum gasket, if leaking, wouldnt cause a major loss in power. If you are concerned about the plenum, remove the air cleaner assembly and look down the throttle body (with butterflies open) with a flashlight and look for heavy oil build up. Now you will have some because the pcv will loose some to the manifold but thats normal.

Your catalytic converter may be clogging up. Older/high mileage vehicles need higher octane gas as they age. Mix in some 93 octane once in a while.

Hey guys, remember how my tranny was clunking when shifting, while for the first time today, when I was going about 80km the O/D kicked off. What gives? Maybe thats why my truck seems sluggish?

Well crawl under your truck and you will see where the linkage for the 4x4 comes through the floor, grab hold of the linkage and move if forward and backwards a little, look for loose pins etc in the linkage and replace as necessary.
Linkage shouldnt move at all unless you happen to move all of it and put in 4x4

Thanks, I'll check the linkage. Does anyone know what has to be replaced when the o/d is going? I don't know too much about trannys. Thanks

Just to add, I just read that it could be my thermostat? Not warming up enough? when hot, the temperature gauge points halfway between cold and the halfwaypoint. Should it be at half or more?

I just passed on my 92 5.2 5 spd auto 4x4 w/230,000 on it to my daughter and picked up an 03 4.7 set up the same way. One of the problems I had on the 92 around 150,000 was wear on the bottom half of the distributor (forgive me, I'm not that technical) to the point that the computer couldn't compensate the timing enough which caused a significant power loss. Between solving that problem and having the fuel injectors thoroughly cleaned is probably what kept me from trading it back then.

Well guys, winter and snow is finally here and and I had a chance to put the Dak in 4x4 mode for the first time. After puttin the t-case in and out of 4x4, the shifter rattling has ceased, go figure. Also the truck idles really smooth? What gives, I have the heat cranked, so is it the termostat?

Is the STAT the original? If so it's not that hard to replace. It is one of the cheapest possible fixes. My two cents worth.

same problems here. 91' 5.2 LE. tranny clinks from 1st to 2nd. rattling at idle, sound like needs to be timed. cab leaks water, can hear air rushing in at 45, on my 3rd tranny, 2nd motor(that was all when my dad drove it, treats it like crap), passenger seat moves without using the lever, shocks suck, fuel gauge doesn't work, it's slowly goin downhill. so i drive like an 80 year old with a new hip.
