Subject: Best Mod for the $ in a 1999 5.9 RT

I was wondering what the best engine modification was for a 1999 5.9 rt. I already have headers and a k&n intake what can I do next to give me the most power for the money?

Hey Mike I got a 2001 R/T and I've got an intake, cat back exhaust, MSD ignition and I've got the 52mm TB on the way. I'd say the TB would be your next best bet it'll add at least 10 HP but it is kinda pricey at $500 for the Flowmetrics TB on Speedtweaks.com but I think its worth it.

I have a 99 R/T too. I would say the next best mod would be a mopar performance computer. It is only about $300. I've talked to people that say it has added as much as 25 horsepower. Not bad for the money. Not to mention that it gets rid of the speed limiter ,gives firmer shifts, and increased timing.

I'll have to agree with everyone here. Get either the TB, or the Mopar PCM. You can pick up the Mopar PCM for $282.70 from www.southeastrt.com and you can get a 50mm billit F&B TB from Sam Parthemer for $390. Email Sam at rtdkota@yahoo.com

The mopar performance pcm requires special encoding from the dealer according to the mopar catalog,is there any way around that?If I bought one from southeastrt, would the dealer still encode it?I have a 99 rt

I'm pretty sure you can run it without doing that. The flashing from the dealer just keeps you from throwing a code. It should only cost about 30 bucks to have it done. The dealer has to program your vin and milage into it.

if you get a mopar computer from krc performance they can program the vin into it for you so that you don't have to mess with a dealer doing it. they charge 330 for the computer and 25 to flash it. just be careful when having the dealership do it for you. i have heard some people talking about the dealer reflashing a stock program back into it, make sure you specifically specify only to flash the vin or you could end up with another stock computer.

I have heard of people talk about the dealer relfashing the Performance PCM with stock program, but hav yet to hear from anyone who it has actually happen to. Urban Legend to me!!! As far as the KRC one. Might be worth looking into. hey might be able ot do a custom flash also. Give them a call. I think John Mercedes is doin a Christmas Special right now $270 for the PCM. www.southeastrt.com

yeah but the dealership will charge you around 50 to flash it and you are taking a chance on them screwing it up and reflashing the stock program into it. i would rather pay the extra 35 and make sure it gets done right by someone who does it all the time.

Like I posted before, I have never actually heard of anyone actually getting the stock program "flashed" onto their Mopar PCM. It has been said it can happen, but never actually heard of it happening to anyone, so until then don't worry about the dealer loading the VIN and mileage into vcomputer

Yeah I think that unless you plan on using your truck other than a daily driver, spring for the NOS but if your just a daily driver NOS might not be the way to go.

About that mopar PCM on that southeastrt website...all they give you is the part numbers, they don't tell you what the price is. Where we supposed to find out how much they are selling them for?

I used nitrous and it was my every day driver. If you use it the right way it is as safe as using 87 octane in a truck. If you learn about it and use it the way it should be used then no problems. I drove it every day and raced it twice a week and my 318 looked like brand new when I took it apart. Pistons, valves, Rods ,bearings all perfect. Is it the best mod yes. If you want to spend it on a supercharger and get half the performance go right ahead. $4,000 dollars is a whole lot of nitrous. You want performance juice is the way to go. Look at the fastest Daks (on the bottle). Sorry other than Duner with his turbo. That's class but nitrous is alot easier mod. Time wise and money wise.

You want to go fast than use the bottle. For those of you who think the bottle is cheating than cut your belt off or plug your exhaust for the turbo and run motor for motor because they all do the same thing.

Racing is racing. How you get there don't matter it's who get's there first.

Mike... I am in the same boat as you are with this question and it looks like that the B&G Flash is going to be flat out amazing. It is normally $630, but if you do the group rate, it's only $530. Read up on it a little bit and I think you'll be really impressed.

John at southeastrt will also flash your vin and mileage for you before he sends it to you for $30. With the Christmas price of $270. That is hands down the best price out there for a Mopar PCM. By the way. They work great. Just got mine from John. Great service. 25 ponies for $300.

I wish there was a place on this site you could post results from the mods that people install about each engine. Have a chart on each engine and tabulate the results for all to see. Like this guy wanting to know about the 5.9 engine and the best mods for it. He could look down the list of mods. See how many people installed this product or performed this mod, their comments, results, gains made, and changes in et. If you did this people could form their own opinions about a particular product or mod regarding different engines and you wouldn't get the same questions asked as new people join or visit this forum. Just a thought.

just so all of you out there know, you cannot flash a mopar performance pcm with a factory flash. the flashes for the factory pcms are part number specific to each factory pcm which means the mopar data 2 system wouldn't even try to update or downgrade any non numbers matching controller. and besides, about 99.9% of those flashes are updates per tsb's only. Being a dodge technician does clearly have it's advantages, doesn't it. hope this helps all you mopar nuts.
