I have a 88 dakota 3.9L 4x4 std. I put 2" blocks on the rear and cranked my torsion bars right up I run 30x9.50 tires with no rub they put 31x10.50 on at the tire shop but they had quiet a bit of rub so I just went with the 30x9.5's e-mail me at stu194@hotmail.com if you want to see pictures of my sweet ride tones of mods.

i get about 17mpg with mine which is a longbed with 88k on it.i have heavy duty shocks in the rear and i run 235/75/r15 on chrome aftermarkets. i have added a k&n air filter, a "Tornado" fuel saver which i have found to help a little, and also a new exhaust with it dualing out near the rear end. there are other things u can do, such as using additives like zmax or octane boosters to help...my speed keeps up and i accelerate pretty quickly. if i didnt hit my pedal to show off like i do, i would get better gas milage.

I also have a 89 Dakota that has over 245K on it. I had the motor port and polished about 8 months ago and it still doesn't have much power at all. I also have 235's on a 2 wheel drive so i don't get better than 12 MPG but the combination of the tire size and the rear-end gear ratio will have alot to do with speed and MPG.

I just changed the plugs, wires and oxygen sensor on my '91 with the TBI pre-Mag 3.9 and my milage has jumped a little. I was getting around 17 mpg mixed driving and now getting 18-19. I haven't beat 20 mpg highway yet, but MO speed limit is 70, so that is what I drive. May get 21-22 if I drive 55-60 instead of 70-75.

mhall02,

What part of MO do you live in?
I'm in the STL County area during the week and the Madison County area on the weekends.

If you ever need any help thoughts or ideas on the one of a kind 91 dakotas, let me know.
I rebuilt mine from the ground up.

St. Charles CO. My 91' is an odd bird, it has sealed beam headlights, like the Gen 1s, I think its a fleet truck or work truck package, plain (no power windows or locks, less to fix) but does have AC and power steering. Picked it up in Imperial a couple of years ago for $2,000, had 113,000 miles on it, 5-speed, 8' bed and the price included a new catalytic converter, safety inspection, emissions inspection, and new plug wires. I now have 142,000 miles and I have replaced the water pump, radiator, plugs, plug wires, brake master cylinder, cap and rotor, oxygen sensor, all belts and hoses, converted AC to 134a (didn't have freon when purchased), and had a rack n pinion put in (didn't try that one). Cap, rotor, oxygen sensor, water pump, belts, hoses and radiator I think were original (I have never seen belts in such bad shape). It runs pretty good considering the miles, doesn't seem to burn any oil, at least I don't add any between changes (every 3,000 miles). Has a slight timing chain rattle but that doesn't seem too uncommon from what I've read.

Mine is also the sealed beam headlight with the curved front end of a 2nd gen.
Has std cab 8' bed, full length ext height camper shell, manual doors locks, fresh (2years) R12 freon in AC.

One thing, there are NO upgradable cams for our trucks.

The 91 V6 uses a Magnum block with pre-mag heads and intake. Thusly the camshaft only fits the 91 V6.
Crank, pistons and such are all magnum parts.
Lifters, rockers, pushrods, valves, heads, intake, are all pre-mag.

Krash...you are wrong.

Mopar Performance produced cams for the PreMag V6 all the way until 2000. They still have a few left, if you really want the part numbers, here they are...and a whole listing of what to do to make premag V6s run.

This address has a scan of the page in the 2000 Mopar Performance catalog

Spencer,

I wish you were right.

The original MOPAR Performance paper catalog I had from 2000 said that the performance cams included 1991.

After recieving the cam and installing it, I realized the timing cover and timing chain did not fit.

I was very perplexed so I called MOPAR performance.
They transferred me to the writers.
They gave me a long distance number for the engineering dept at Chrysler (before Daimler).

After discussing it them they sent a notice to update the new catalogs with a note at the bottom of the page that excludes the 91 V6 due to the specialized setup using the newer block and older heads and intake.

If you don't believe me, by all means feel free to call them yourself.

Krash...to tell you the truth, you're probably right...but they do make cams...just not for 91s then ;)

As for the tech line, I'm surprised you got any info from them, as every time I have called, they don't seem to know anything and can only say "that part is discontinued" but one time I managed to wrangle the cam timing specs (valves open/close) from one person...other than that, its a fugging joke to call them

Spencer,

You're not kidding about the morons on the tech line.
What I didn't say in my last post is that the process I went through took me about 2.5 hours on the phone.
Yeah, one heck of a fukn phone bill.

I have a 91 3.9L V6 auto trans wiht 3.92 rear axle, std cab, and 8ft bed.
135,000 miles

A couple things to check/fix/replace that I had to that helped alot;

Vaccuum lines
Throttlebody rebuild kit (new gaskets)
Charcaol canister
O2 sensor
Fuel pump/screen/filter

As for performance upgrades;

Accel/MSD ignition coil
Accel/MSD wires
Conrad Brass plated cap and rotor kit (or equiv)
K&N air filter
or
Open air intake conversion kit
Flowmaster exhaust
Manual exhaust cutout
Pacesetter shorty headers (very cheap)

That's the best I can think of right now.
I'm a little tired from driving from Texas back home to Missouri.

Thanks for the tips man. I took ur advice and got the kn air filter... and flowmaster duals put on my truck. I know another dakota man here in town that gave me a "recipe" so to speak for a homespun ram air charger. I did that as well. Along with a fresh tune up and lube job. The trucks running like new and it fast as hell.
