Subject: 3.9L Engine Problems: Stalling/ missfire
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been having troubles with my truck idling very rough, hearing a bit of a weird high pitch whine coming from behind the intake and when I am driving it will randomly cut out for a second and then kick back up and continue on like nothing happened. Any suggestions would be great at this point. I am ready to fix my problem!

There could be many problems with the vehical.I sugest process of elimination.First a good tune up,complete with plugs and wires.Next clean with carb. cleaner the IAC,RIGHT BEHIND TBI.Where u hear the whining.I would guess sencor is out but throwing a code-IT HAPPENS!!!Anyways try that and let me know how it went...

My 88 4x4 was having the same thing. I changed everything from teh ISC, TPS,filters, cleaned the throttle body...everything...EXCEPT the MAP sensor, located on the left side of the Ignition coil. It cost me $90 bucks a year ago and I haven't had a problem since. I wish I had known...but hey, it didn't hurt anything changing all of those parts. Good luck.

My truck is sputtering pretty bad during take off but when i get up to about 2500 to 3500 rpm it stops and runs smooth, it does this constantly cold, warm, running all day, it doesnt matter. I replaced my cat about two years ago, when it started and it stopped for about ten months now its doing it all over again so i took my cat out completly, as a trial and error exercise, and it still does it??? i might be an idot here but what is my problem?

Have you tried checking for any codes? And a
little more info on the vehicle in question would
help with the diagnosis.

02 dakota 3.9....sluggish take off until over 2500rpm's. the weather doesnt matter rain snow or sunny day it'll do it...first code it threw was O2 sensors replaced those and the cat and a few months went by no problems and then all of a sudden it happened again and then stopped now, its so bad im scared to even pull out of my drive way because of the sluggish start...the last few months ive been going without the cat to see if that really was the issue but its still sluggish...could it be ignition problems ie dist., sparks, wires, maybe fuel? even replaced the MAS and still nothing

I hope this helps someone. I have a 1994 Dakota
with the 3.9 that I bought new. It was my daily
drive for about 9 years and has been my weekend
work truck for the past 10 years. It only has
about 120,000 miles on it. I have had the dreaded
idle problems listed here and could not figure out
what it was. Changed IAC and MAP sensor and
neither fixed it. It was my EGR valave. My
catalytic converted got clogged up a few years ago
and had to be replaced, I think it blew out my EGR
valve. Anyway, I read about this fix on another
forum and checked out my EGR valve and it was
blown. Very easy to replace only took about 15
minutes and I am not that handy with tools. Truck
now runs like it used to. Good luck, this problem
drove me crazy for the past year.

2002 3.9 liter 177k I've been getting a lean code bank 2. puffing out black smoke rough idle. I've changed all injectors, fuel pump, throttle position sensor, changed map sensor. It runs a little better since I changed these things. But it still runs rough. Any suggestions I'm tired of throwing parts at it. Intake problems with these engines?

i have had a 1997 with 109k on it, about 6 months.
mine was stalling at idle and losing oil pressure.
so i changed the oil and filter. there was a lot of
fine metallic powder in it, and the wrong filter.
this seemed to fix the oil pressure but it still
wouldn't idle. turns out my stalling out was due to
the main cam bearing being worn out. i cant imagine
how it could be worn out at that low of miles.

I have a 93 Dakota 3.9 also had it over a year and the first problem I had was it stalled when I came to a stop. I checked the vaccum hose and it had a big crack. SO I replaced that and it seemed to run little better and now only stalls when I come to a sudden stop? If I slowly stop it seems to be fine. what does any one recommend next?

I have a 2wd 92 Dakota with the 3.9 v6 and she's been having
some issues lately. It backfires on startup occasionally and I
have to rev it until it clears and sometimes it won't hold idle
and it'll try to die. Sometimes it just shuts down while I'm
driving. I've replaced the fuel pump, valve cover gaskets, new
plugs, new thermostat, new throttle position sensor, cleaned
the idle control air valve, and perform regular oil changes. I
just need to get these problems fixed. Any help would be
awesome. Thanks.

Rebuilt engine. Had injectors reconditioned, new fuel pump, new plugs, wires, rotor cap. New EGR valve. New cat converter. Sometimes starts right up, sometimes have to floor accelerator to get it to start. Driving along, randomly will choke down, backfire (lost muffler once) and barely run for a minute or so. Used to happen about every 100 miles or so, now every 8-10 miles. Checked distributor. Play within limits, timing sensor firm on distributor. Fuel pressure OK. Usually do my own repairs, but this one has been on and off for months and I am scratching my head. today cleaned the contacts for computer and sensors. No change.
