Subject: 3.9 liter misfiring and stuttering
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '01 Dodge dakota 3.9 liter 105,000 miles. About 2 weeks ago i pulled out into traffic and i had no power and it was misfiring. Its sporadic. The dealership ran the code and told me it was a O2 sensor, bank 2 sensor 1. I replaced the 2 upstream O2 sensors. No check engine light. Still having the same problem. The truck was tuned last winter. Any ideas guys

Daddio is right check fuel pressure, could be fuel pump, but with that many mile need all 4 O2 sensors anyway. www.ngk.com for sensors

check the cat it may be pluged this will cause a
big loss of power

What you need to do is find a good shop and have
them watch all the sensors with a scanner to see
what is going on

Also you can have a pending code that will not
light the mil malfunction indicater light

posible
crank sensor
dist pickup
bad coil

check the conections on these 3 things

I would check into replacing the fuel filter/regulator especially if fuel pressure checks low. Mopar claims this is a no maintainence item due to less fuel flow from returnless FI. But field experience has proven otherwise and Mopar now offers offers it as a serperate part. Replace mine at 60k and it was in pretty bad shape. Before you go to the trouble of pulling the tank to replace, you might want to have a tech do a current ramp on the pump to check pump motor condition. If the motor looks bad, you might as well go ahead and replace the pump module as it includes a new filter/regulator.

Good luck.

You have to be carful were you get your sensors
they are not all created equal

I recomend getting all the sensors from the dealer
like map, tps, crank dist pickup, the o2 the
ngk ntk is what the factory instals and is cheaper
buying direct from ngk.com

On the temp sensors IAT, guage and engine temp
the wells will work this is just a variable
resistor but the others do have a distinkt scope
pattern the computer reads

Most of the well temp sensors are within 5 degrees
and will work fine

Is changing the crankshaft position sensor an easy job? What does this sensor cost?

I have a 1998 3.9 Dakota 180,000 doing the same thing. I have a p0420 Code. After drivig for 15minutes or more then I turn off the truck for 5 minuts and start it back up after about 3 tens of a mile it would start to have no power with my foot and the pedal and would backfire and after I take my foot off the gas 2 to 3 times it would clear up and does not come back

Have your dealer / mechanic check the engine harness, my dads ram van with a 3.9 melted the harness, and it started pulling the same problems until the harness got changed after that it ran like new

Roger

So today when my hood was up a started my truck and about 15sec later it started to mis and sounded like there was a air leak sound and the sound was coming from the passenger side of the engine by the manifold later on looking closer i notice that one of my bolts that holds on the manifold was missing and you could stick a pen right into it. SO i went to a local shop and they said that could cause the code p0420 to come on it messes up the readings of the o2 senors since there is that hole in the part of the exhaust. I am going to fix that next.

umm well if its the same as the ram vans, it should be on the right side the harness will come close the the exhaust manifold joint to the cat, right in there, the way ours looked was it melted the casings, and the wires were touching shorting some of them out

now i have a 1993 dakota with the 3.9 and mine is the first year they made this modification but to make more power dodge took and ported the valves so large that the metal between the valves would crack, resulting in lose of compression on that cylinder, so check your compression i had to replace my one head as soon as i bought my truck, and the first junkyard replace ment i looked at was cracked too. so check your compression
