Subject: Transmission Swap: A500 for A518/A618
IP: Logged

Message:
I am about to rebuild my transmission in my '97 318 4wd Dakota, and wondered if anyone knew if I could swap out the stock A500, which I understand is an A904 with overdrive, and replace it with an A518 or A618, which is the A727 with overdrive. 500 torques are just a few too many for my A500 to handle, plus I know the A518/618 both work with the F1 shifter I am planning to install. Anybody with advice or experience with these trannys would be much appreciated.

If it's just a stock 318 then I don't see nothing wrong with the A-500 or 44re. If you had a larger engine or if you boosting up the power to your 5.2 then go with the A518. The A-618 built to handle the power of a the V10 and Cummins Diesel

All the powerflights (909 904) ect was 2 speed transmissions. Your 44 RE is more related to the toruqe flight transmission.

Thanks for the responses, guys, but my engine isn't stock, which is why I keep tearing up my tranny. My literal question, however was how difficult it would be to do, since I have 4wd, I can't just resort to cutting the driveshaft, so I wonder if the 518/618 is longer, or if I could fit it in the same spot. Otherwise I will have to find a way to beef up the strength of my current A500.

The A500 was based on the 909. But it could be converted to a 11 speed if you knew what you was doingtTT.

The A500s and A518s are identical in size, I believe. So it should be a relatively clean swap; same case, different parts inside - like the gear ratios.

Here's a very informative link:

I suggest you read it thoroughly. I'm planning on doing the same thing with my truck for my 360(365) I'm building.

Well, let's see... 4L changes the Final Drive, so in his defense I technically already have 8 forward gears, 2 reverses, and Park. That makes 11 gears. (Can't count Neutral, since that is the absence of gears) That being said, I am used to ignoring claims like that, though he was right about the purpose of the A618.

If anyone can help you, these guys are it.

Feel free to contact me via e-mail. My website needs to be updated but it is www.neverenoughperformance.com.

I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7 with built internals and a rear mount turbo and a built trans. It currently runs 12.50's with alot more to come... I ended up going through suncoast for my parts but these guys above are pretty cool as well and they are the only ones I know about that do all of the dodge stuff.

Good Luck!!! Talk to the pros, some of the guys on here are knowledgeable but the pros do it every day and they can sell you the parts you need to make your trans stay together. I have an account with Suncoast but not PATC yet. Although if I had a large enough order I could set something up with them as well.

Take care,

Jason

In correct use of grammer and every start of a sentence should use a capital letter. You should have watched the Letter People on PBS in it aired.

Perhaps "know how" was your intent?
The last two sentences about grammar have terrible grammar, you are supposed to use two spaces after a period before the start of a new sentence, you misspelled "doesn't" and "grammar", and you should've capilaized the 'T' in 'The Letter People', since it is the first letter in a title.

You shall be imprisoned for impersonating an agent of the Grammar Police.

P.S. Before you ask, the 'T' in "the Grammar Police" isn't supposed to be a capital, as 'the' is not part of their name.

Not to mention the absence of proper punctuation, along with the poor, poor grammatical abilities of said "Moderator":

"Now just who is the idiot here???!!? "
"Now[,] just who is the idiot here[?]"
(The Brackets are used to signify change)

Commas help separate "thoughts", as it were. And the use of more than one punctuation mark at the end of a sentence is, sadly, marked as childish. A Parentheses (being set as example, thus; being capitalized as it is being used as a proper noun) is not necessarily a punctuation mark, but the Period at the end of a sentence goes outside of the Parentheses, otherwise it is marked within the same "thought". For example:
"I, once, had a cat (who's name was Tabs.) He was a very skittish cat."
Reads as: "I, once, had a cat he was a very skittish cat." Clearly, an improper sentence. If the Period were to come after the Parentheses, is would read: "I, once, had a cat. He was a very skittish cat."

But, this is grade-school grammar we're talking about. Alas, I must admit, I am clearly thrown by the fact that I can remember all this so fluently - I feel like a teacher, and no one's listening. But, as a teacher, I shall continue thus:
(Who can tell me if that last sentence was a Simile or a Metaphor, without looking it up?)

"In correct use of grammer and every start of a sentence should use a capital letter. You should have watched the Letter People on PBS in it aired."
"In [the] correct use of grammar[,] and [at] every start of a sentence[, one] should use a [C]apital letter. You should have watched ["T]he Letter People["] on PBS [while] it aired."

Link, I like you, so I'm only going to point out a couple things in jest:
"... you misspelled ..."
"... you['ve] misspelled ..."
And, unfortunately, "Should've" is not a word.

Chris G, in my defence, I would like to inform you that Mirriam-Webster's dictionary defines "should've" as follows:

"The correct literation of the contraction for 'should have', which is often transcribed incorrectly as 'should of'."

Also, as far as your first claim against myself is concerned; 'misspell' is, in fact, a verb that was being used in an exclusively finite conjugated tense, which, therefor, does not require the use of a modal auxiliary verb in the form of "have misspelled", as this would effectively change the context of the original statement. Seeing as you like me, though, I will not proceed to point out the innumerable amount of grievous errors in your rant, though I could certainly point you to several good resources for linguistics if you wished to further your education beyond that of said 'grade-school' level. Again, I don't mean to offend, but if your claim of this being 'grade-school grammar' is correct, then I am afraid I have a few more years of higher learning in that field than you do.

Moral: Do NOT correct people if you corrections are not correct. Remember; The true test of grammar is not how well you use it when you proof read, but how well you use it when you do not.

That being said, let's screw the grammar and go back to talking about trucks. That's what we're here for, right? That, or let the thread die, as the question has actually been answered.
