Subject: Tow Hook Idea!
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a new idea for tow hooks.
My dakota is a 99' but it should work for other years also.
If you look behind your bumper about 4-5" to the inside of your fog lights you should see the frame about 5inches away from the bumper.
Bolt in a piece of steel plate or steel block to cover that distance and then drill a 1-1.5" hole in the block and the bumper so that you can thread a bolt (that also has inside threads)into the block behind the bumper .
Now you can remove and install the (hooks, shackles,or loop rings) and whatever else you want in and out as you need them quick enough and all you can see is a threaded hole. And they will not effect your angle of approach because they are not always there
If anyone on this site is an engineer feel free to shoot down my idea or elaborate on it.

I thought the 99's had factory tow hooks as an option. I may be wrong and it was an earlier year.

The factory one had a couple of brackets - one on each side to mount to the frame rail. Then a support that ran between both. The tow hooks were not universal. The section with the bolt holes was like 5 or so inches long and the holes were perpidicular to the hook. The hooks mounted facing in (or out would work too i guess) and the bolts went up into into the truck frame rail.
