Powertrax and Aussie Locker make lockers for the '97 to '99 Dakota front axle (M35/Dana 35 I think). Powertrax is easier to install but I believe it is recommended that you have manual locking hubs or a central axle disconnect (neither of which were available) when used in the front. The Aussie locker looks like it would be ideal because it utilizes a cable to lock the diff when ever you want/need it. I've heard of guys having trouble with breaking c.v shafts and the aluminum case while wheeling with a front locker. So maybe only use it in mud and other slippery conditions and not on the rocks. If you've got a dakota older than '97 or newer than than '99 I think you're out of luck unless you custom swap another axle in there. Good luck!

In your case, you could swap in a front axle/differential and c.v shafts from a '97-'99 Dakota. 2LoudDodge was/is selling that for $400. I know it would end up alittle pricey for these parts plus the locker(and gears if you were changing them), but being able to lock the front axle would have helped me out in some sticky situations. Myself I think I would probably go with that Aussie locker(not really sure of the price though), so I can lock the diff when I want to. Just remember if your not changing gears to get another front axle/diff with the same gears, most are 3.55's.

if i have a front axle disconnect on my truck, could I theoreticaly weld the front axle up and not have to worry about it?
the 95 spun the driveshaft all the time, so it cant be too bad on the T-case if it came that way from the factory can it?

the tires when disconnected could run at different speeds right?

You're absolutely correct. That is an idea I had thought about for some time now. There are a few issues with this though. Turning when the front axle is engaged might not be so easy even on slippery surfaces and especially in tight situations. Strength may be of concern if driving in high stress/technical, and rocky terrian. 2wd low range will be no longer as well. Finally, if you happen to use a snow plow with this set-up, it would be difficult and the strength issue comes up again. I believe mud and sand would be fine for the most part. The only other issues I can think of at the moment are more wear on the front shaft U joints. If by chance you go through with this I would definitely like to hear how it works out for you. I admit I really wish something like the Aussie locker was available to lock and unlock the diff simply by pulling a cable from inside the cab. Something like this front and rear would be awsome. Damn IFS.

Sorry guys, I've been getting 2 locking differentials mixed up. I mentioned the Aussie Locker with regards to the cable actuated front lockers. I meant to speak of the Ox Locker. The Ox locker appears to be available for the Dana 35 with 27 spline axles which '97 to '99 Dakota's have.

ARB makes the only driver actuated locker that I know of for the chr. 8 1/4" 27 spline axle. Probably run you about $800 US plus another $250 US for the compressor. My Powertrax no-slip cost me half that canadian and it is installed without touching the ring and pinion. Haven't had a single issue yet, just be easy on the throttle in snowy conditions on turns.

as for welding a front with CAD i dont see why it wouldnt work, i mean, when you dissconcet the shaft the 2 wheels are no longer locked together
the driveshaft would spin all the time when moving, but it dis anyway on the 95 dakota i pulled the driveshaft and t-case out of

Hey Super bee, my first reply on 5/02/2006 was actually for you. It probably didn't seem that way because I think Paul was writting his message at the same time. And my last reply was for Paul. Looks like I got jumbled up yesterday with the replies. Any ways, the welded front axle idea should work just like you stated. I am just concerned with the issues I stated above. I was contemplating the same thing, but I decided not to follow through with it. Again, if you do weld up your front diff, please let me know how it works out for you.

Super bee,
My only experience with locking differentals was with a Unimog. I recall a whole lotta fightin goin on!
Seems to me if you do what you plan something's gotta give, and your arms will only be the first thing.
Other than that, I admire your theory.

my arms????

and like i siad, when you flip the switch for my CAD it would be like basicly unlocking a locker, the axles would no longer be connected
sooo.... anyone have any ideas why not?
i would have one front wheel driving if i pulled the t-case lever and not flipped the CAD switch so driving in kinda slippery conditions would not be an issue

it would not work cause i believe the CAD system disconnects the front drive shaft from the differential(basically). so the axles will still be welded. you would have a interesting time turning.

the CAD is not on the driveshaft, it is on the passengers side of the front axleshaft right before the halfshaft

hmmm.. i read about people welding the front pumpkin. your right about where it disconnects. anyways, the front wont hold up to any real wheeling if you weld it. ive heard of cv axle shafts snapping off alot. probably best to just leave it open.
