Changed my trans fluid to Amsoil yesterday.(first time I`ve done this, hey theres a magnet in the pan, lol) Ordered filters from bulkpart.com. They were very fast and yes they are Filtran filters and are cheap, 38.17 including 7.50 shipping for two pan gaskets, two deep pan 4 wheel drive filters, and one spin on. I forgot to order the seals for the non-spin on filters which is a pain because nobody else sells them seperately and bulkpart wont process an order under $14.00.(they are 93 cents each at bulkpart) Dealer wanted $22.50 for filter that came with seal so I just used original seal. Instead of flushing trans I am taking sandmans advice and just dropping pan now at 10k and again at 30k. Just changing "reg" filter now and both at 30k, next change after that will be at 90k. The two pan gaskets are the cork type(hoped they would be rubber). Used one this time ,will use the Permatex "right stuff" next time.(worked great on my diff) The "reg" filter was easy, held in place by one torx scew. Also I took a big chance and stick weded a 3/4" thread-a-let on the pan without burning through with a 3/8" hole to drain the pan in the future. Used about 3/4s of a 2 1/2 gallon Amsoil jug(2-3 quarts left).

Now I just need to find out how to deal with the spin-on filter. Any advice would be appreciated.

03 qc 4.7 auto(no kidding)

I did my transmission / transfer case / rear diff about a month ago. It wasn't any problem, except that I ended up needing way more fluid for the transmission than the dealer said I would, and more than the factory service manual said I would. I had it up on ramps, and dropped the pan, and let it drip for a good long while. I ended up needing 2.5 gallons to get it back up to where it should have been. The parts guy at my dealer thought maybe the angle of the ramps let the torque converter drain out as well. I don't know.

In any case, the filters were no problem. I got them from Bulkparts as well. I bought the seal but didn't use it. The main filter was no problem, and neither was the spin-on. I just brought it to a local AutoZone, and found a filter cup-wrench that fit it. The old one came right off, and the new one went right on.

The only problem I think I might have had was my transfer case (4WD) took less to fill than came out. I did the transfer case on a level surface. I even drove it around to see if the fluid needed to work in someplace. But no matter what, the level is always up to the bottom of the fill hole, even though I probably put about a cup or two less fluid in than I took out. Either way, it works fine now. Maybe it was overfilled at the factory or something.

Thanks Andy, I didn`t think of that(spin-on wrench), too easy. Just like the thread-a-let I welded on. Mechanic at work said I could of just tack welded a 1/2" nut inside the pan and got a 1/2" drain plug to fit.(DOH!) Would of been much neater and much less likely to burn through. Oh well, live and learn.

I have changed mine each year around 25,000 miles. The first two times, I got the wrong filter so all I could do was clean out the pan & magnet and 6-8 quarts of fluid. This time I thought I had it figured out and have the correct flat-shaped filter and pan gasket from Carquest at home, ready to go ($27)

Now reading the forum, I see I need a spin-on filter?, and a seal? I think I saw the spin on filter when I had the pan off (small metal- colored that looks like an oil filter?).

Andy or Jeremiah, do you know where I can get the complete kit, both filters, seals (if needed) (at Napa, Carquest, AutoZone, O'Rielly, or Advance)? They found this 45RFE transmission under the Durango, not Dakota at Carquest. Most other places couldn't even find it before (last year).

I don't care about the pan gasket as I have some "Right Stuff" at home that I used before. I just want to get all the correct parts before the messy job again (3rd time).

I also want to get the spin-on filter cap wrench you mention to make it easier.

Does Dodge recommend changing both filters?

Also they gave me Valvoline +4, instead of +3. Is the +4 better? Can it be mixed with +3 (as some will be left in the torque converter and I have a few quarts left from last year)?

Thanks. Need answers badly.

jpconard, I never heard of Valvoline trans fluid(not that I should have) but the +4 sounds right because Dodge went from a +3 to +4.(you should have been putting that +4 in there from the beginning I think))You can mix them but maybe its time for a complete flush if you have +3 in there now? If you use Amsoil univ. trans fluid you could go 60k no problem, only have to change it because the filters will need changing before the fluid is anywhere near bad. Anyways I strongly recomend you order from bulkpart.com, they are way cheaper than dealer for the same filtran filters.(you paid $27, at bulkpart $17, and that includes $7.50 for shipping) The seal is for the neck of the "reg" filter(its lodged in the trans body). Its not that critical but for 93 cents get one(at bulkpart they don`t come with filter, you have to order seperately). Go to any auto part store with new spin on filter and match it up with a small "cup" style oil filter. Good Luck.

My mistake the Valvoline is ATF+3, the owners manual says to use ATF+3, so that is what I am using. The dealer said my manual would say ATF+4, I guess he was wrong. They like to act cocky and god-like, but in the end they are just a-holes.

I'll try online next time, unfortunately it looks like I can only get both filters in the entire St. Louis area from the stinking Dodge dealers.

This specialty fluid ATF+4 and special filters which can't be found anywhere else is for the birds in my opinion. It is Chrysler's master plan.

No wait, I want those special Chrysler made spark plugs, belts, tires, oil and gas. Maybe I should just pay for the Chrysler monthly service plan. That is what it is coming to, better by Japanese next time.

No one has mention adjusting the bands. Does this need to be done at fluid change or not? If so is it hard to do? What would be the easiest way to replace ALL fluid it Trans and not just the pan?
