Yup, I'm assuming the 2000 Durango has a 4.7 motor. The transmission goes into "limp home" mode when the sensor goes bad. You lose 1st gear, get hard shifting, and no overdrive. That's normal. Get a new sensor. Be careful though, There are 2 different sensors called "output speed sensor"s. One is on the transmission, the other is on top of the rear end. You need the one going into the transmission.

My truck earlier today suddenly came on with a CEL. The truck as soon as it is put into D, it goes direcetly to 3rd gear. I can manually shift it to 2nd, but it will not go into first at all. it won't kick down into 2nd at all while in D, it just has 3rd and O/D-torque converter.

Sometimes, i can override it by starting in N it seems, light will be on, but ill have full usuage of gears, and everything is back to normal, except sometimes it has a slight delay changing back into 1st gear slowing down.

Couple years ago i replaced the output sensor, it cuased the truck to stick completly in 1st, no exceptions. Could this be it again?? I REALLY need help here guys.

I have a 2001 dakota 4x4 awd 4.7 V8 automatic w/overdrive.

The other day I was driving along my yellow picture of my engine came on in the dash array and my transmission kept upshifting and downshifting and I lost my overdrive. Can anyone give me an idea as to what this trouble might be I do not know anything about error codes and am not much of a mechanic. The transmission fluid is up to level and is not burnt. I live in the U.P of Michigan and am disabled and will need my truck before the snow really starts to fly.

Thanks for any help offered

Russ, if you live near Newberry try taking your
truck to the dealer there.

I live in NW Ohio but I was up in the U.P. camping
and had a 98 Dak at the time and needed a problem
taken care of. They treated me ok.. Only dealer-
ship I can say that about.

Good luck.

My 2001 dakota 4x4 w/4.7 auto & OD gets the CEL, and gives codes 0720 & 0715, but when all is checked, the sensors are all good, so I expect a short in the harness between the TCM and Input/Output sensors. Dodge has now charged me over $800 and cannot seem to "find" the real problem. This failure results in no shifting out of 1st at all when in drive, with OD on or off, but I can limp along in second just fine as long as I don't go over 40 mph. Funny, but there are a series of "speed bumps" on one particular road that I can drive over that somehow temporarily fixes the short and allows the signals to get through and all shifts well for a while. I never know when the short will reappear. HELP!

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Manual trans. V6. I
have having the same symptoms as others. EBrake
light, Abs are on and my truck will not idol. If i
shift down to first gear when stopping (which is a
hassle)and when it is about to choke the engage
the clutch it will idol.

because of this forum my first fix was the vss in
the rear dif. Easy fix. however unlike others here
after re-setting the pcm the lights are still on
and the the truck will not idol. so, I bought a
output sensor on the trans and will be putting it
on today. I am not hopefully that this will fix
the problem. If this will not work I am out of
ideas.... I am not familiar with the sensor
technology nowadays but i find it quite
frustrating that it messes with so many other
functions.

Please help.

I have a 1998 dodge dakota V6 automatic. Earlier today I was driving it and it would not shift into overdrive the abs and brake light is on but unlike other posters on here my speedometer seems to be working well. I had the codes checked at o'Reilly autoparts and it came up 3 codes. I dont remember code numbers but One was Cylinder 4 misfire, multiple cylinder misfire, and speed sensor. Which sensor would I need to fix this problem? And also if anyone knows how to fix the cylinder misfire I would gladly appreciate it, I have changed plugs and plug wires but I still get a misfire/backfire sound in the intake at a low rpm but gets better once the truck is warm. Any ideas? Thanks

Bought a 99 DAKOTA acouple years ago,Love the truck! That's as long as it's running right.
Had to get few things fixed which is to be expected in a high milage older truck. So this is just one more {DON'T U LUV IT !!}.
Anyway, I had the same problem as Richard Gomeze,"hope you got it fixed by now?" found out it was something as simple as a loose coil wire in my case!!! So what's up with this OSS cable? Seems that the guy who had the truck before me, put a band aid on the cabe(not litteraly) but you kn ow what I mean.

Bottom line is , the conector retaining clip was broken off and when I took off the band aid! the cable practicaly slaped me in the face. Anyway,it looks like one single strand of wire is still going into the tranny when I removed the cable??/?? Anybody got some feed back on that? Is it that I yank it out and run a new cable back down from the motor or what? That wire has got me puzzzeld.

I have changed my speed sensor in the rear diff box on my 01 dodge dakota sport. This did resolve the abs light and brake light, and wild speedometer movements. However when I went on my second test drive the lights came back on, speedo is steady. I know the sensor isn't bad, but could it be harness contacts? or a short in the wiring?

I also noticed oil is leaking out around the rubber plug in the transfer case. Could it be low oil or something else inside that is throwing off the new sensor?

Thanks,
Ryan

I had the same issue on my 2001 dakota. Speedometer was erratic and eventually stopped reading any speed at all. Then I started having stalling issues when I disengaged. This caused me to almost get into an accident as it stalled as I was in the middle of a turn and the power steering stopped working. Replaced the rear differential speed sensor but still had issues. I even pulled apart the rear diff case to check for metal shavings and found nothing. Replaced the oil and the gasket and pulled the sensor again to check it's head.

After doing this second sensor check I found I had a working speedometer again, so I blamed the harness. Fiddling around with the wires seemed to make it read properly. So I cut the harness off and took it apart, and sure enough the wire insulation was warn off and the wires were fraying out. This was because the long wire was blowing around in the wind and over time it wore down and shorted. I had a spare harness from the bumper license plate lights which I had changed out earlier. The Advanced autos doesn't carry this style of harness. I soldered it in and taped it up real good, and now everything works great!

I have a 99' V6 Dakota with the ABS and Brake light steadily on. I've read through the posts and found the Rear Speed Sensor to be the culprit. So I replaced it but am still getting the lights on. Not having any speedo problems or otherwise.

I didn't seem to recall the harness having any frayed wires or ones sticking out. I'm guessing maybe I should double check the harness after Ryan's story..

Any tips?

Thanks.
