Subject: Does Dakota have 4wd on the fly?
IP: Logged

Message:
Guys, excuse me if this is a "noob" question but I don't have alot of experience with a 4x4. I bought my 2000 5.9 Sport QC used and have no owner's manual and I was wondering if I can go from 2WD to 4Hi while on the move? My Dak is an auto and has the 4x4 shifter in the floor instead of buttons, I'd rather have the shifter than buttons that might tear up on me anyway. I've had it for a couple of years and I've always waited until I'm stopped and I shift it to neutral first. I'm just paranoid about screwing up the transfer case because of a stupid mistake.

I'm not positive on this...but I believe the shifters on the floor require you to stop and do like you do before you put it into 4HI.

The newer Dakotas with the buttons I believe can be done on the fly. But like I said, I'm not positive...the only 4wd's I've driven are tractors and four-wheelers.

Mine's an '00 also - you'll be fine shifting on the fly into 4 Hi with that manual engagement. I prefer the direct linkage to a system that could loose vacuum or voltage too. The only time you need to stop and shift into neutral is for low range. Most systems like ours recomend not shifting on the fly above 55 or 60 mph.

If your good, you can shift from 4 low to 4 high on the fly without grinding gears on the leaver type. it's like shifting the old none sincro tranies. I done this for as many years as I can remember.

So many problems .... So little time

Look in your glove box on the spec. sheet. I'm pretty sure mine says something like 'shift on the fly', but mine's a 99.

The owner's manual and the visor sticker on my 92 with floor shifter say to shift from 2WD to 4Hi while moving at low speed, not while stopped.

The Dakota has always been shift on the fly since it was introduced in 1987. I can't think of any current day production vehicles that are not. Kowalski is correct, "Most systems like ours recomend not shifting on the fly above 55 or 60 mph"

4Lo is a different story, you should slow to just a couple on miles an hour before shifting into it.
If your speedometer needle is moving, you're going too fast.

Huh! I could've swore I typed something about not having an owner's manual....

I was just wondering cause I like to use 4hi on wet rainy days but sometimes get down the road and it's dry. I've thought several times I should be able to just slap that shifter back but never wanted to try it.

If you have mechanical linkage you are in luck. You can do things like shift gears. Assuming a manual transmission here.

Low range is simply another, lower, set of gears. The ratios are such that there is overlap; 1st being low, 2nd low being between 1st and 2nd high and so-on.

You can teach yourself how double-clutch (because there is no synchromesh) to downshift into and out of low range while moving. Start by shifting back into high range. There is a time when the gears mesh, and you won't have the grinding of gears.

Be gentle.

[An aside; If you have a manual transmission, teach yourself how to shift without the clutch (big-rig drivers only use the clutch to start and stop) and you'll have the advantage of things lasting longer and you'll be a smoother driver.]

The gears grinding gently hurts nothing. They'll grind and then you'll feel them slide together. Mesh together, if you will. Take you half a day to get the feel of it.
Once you get the hang of it you can show off, like I did, going up and down all eight gears of the Land Rover, without using the clutch.

Lesson number one of Four Wheel Driving: Engage the front axle before you you need it.
Number Two: Be in the proper gear going into the situation.
Three: Go slow.

Why?
You will be able to drive it home.

71firebird..... Myself, I wouldn't use 4WD on wet pavement ever. Not the type you have. A good friend drove home from graveyard shift on Ice and he had his CJ in 4wd. He parked in the yard and went to bed. His wife needed to run to the store. 4 blocks one way. By this time it was wet pavement. She totaly distroyed the transmission including the cluster gear going around a corner. Talk about a pricy fix. The cluster alone was almost 400 bucks. Put your truck on a wet parking lot and do a turn. You will feel it binding up. Do as you think best but no way am I going to distroy anything just to be in 4WD. I've never in my intire life seen a wet paved road that needed 4WD But over 40 years in my shop I repaired a lot of drive trains from one end to the other from guys doing as you do.

So many problems .... So little time

I have a 2000 Ext. cab with the 4.7 and automatic and I can go into 4hi without stopping.
I knew they made the 2000 quadcab with the 5.9, did they make it any other years after that?

Uh, apparently in 2000 :-P Kowalski beat me to it!

Thanks again for all the info guys, OBIO, I had never thought about causing damage. I feel it wheel hop a little if I'm in a really tight turn like turning into a driveway or something. I'd just been using it in the wet to help me get going from a stop, that 5.9 will spin'em before ya know it and traffic is rolling toward me while I'm still trying to get going. Now that I know I can shift on the fly perhaps it's best to take it out of 4hi before making that tight turn.

Perhaps for the tightest turns; but I can tell you I've put many thousands of miles on several different 4x4's in wet weather and never had 4WD damage. Near freezing temps in the winter, it can be very hard to tell black ice from wet pavement - my theory is that gas is cheaper than sheet metal. It's worked well for me over the years.

MADMAX - I'm not sure when the 5.9's were discontinued for the QC; one way to figure it out would be looking up some years on KBB.com to see when it was no longer an option.

71firebird,
I'm sort of like Kowalski, except it was dirt roads in Africa with 1960's Jeeps and Land Rovers.
So, with my out of date experience, OBIO3; what is different in modern four wheel drive that would cause loss of control and/or damage?

I've stuck mine in 4HI in the rain many times.
With the LSD it's insane to move at all in 2WD without it going sideways. Mo matter how little I touch the throttle. A lot of times a good rain will bring up the oils from the grooves in the asphault and it is slippery than sh*t for my Dak.

I'll usually switch to 4HI to get going safely and at crusing speed hold steady and switch to 2HI

Bumped for MADMAXIN22, who still doesn't seem to believe you could get a 5.9 2000 QC over in the v8 section.
