Subject: Alarm won't let me start my %@$# truck!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 Dakota and my remote stopped working tonight in a store parking lot. I went back into the store and bought new batteries for the remote, but that wasn't the problem. So, I used the key to manually unlock it and (of course) my alarm blared. Now, I cannot for the life of me get the darn alarm to disarm nor can I get it to start!!! When I turn the key in the ignition, all the lights come on therefore, the battery itself is good.

Is there anyone out here who can help me figure this one out AND keep me from blowing the truck up?! ;)

those ideas won't work on a factory alarm. the alarm is built into the PCM and would not have any wires under the dash, and there is no seperate fuse for it, it just activates the horn and lights and they are fused normally, but the vehicle still will not start, Put the key into the door lock, make sure the door is closed as it won't disarm otherwise, and unlock the door. That is the alternative to using a factory fob to unlock the alarm.
My lousy Chiltons does not show the alarm in their wiring diagrams,

I found another thread that says that the alarm is controled by the central timing modual and the only way to fix the alarm is to replace the ctm. Cost by according to the poster was 300 bucks, it also controls things like your head light relay, wiper relay, factory fog lights, emergency flashers, and door lock motors and switches, so yeah you need to replace it.

I'd hope to GAWD that inserting a KEY into the door lock would NOT disable the alarm :p
Because what if some theif simply TORE your door open where the key lock is and forced it to turn? They'd be able to steal your truck anyway.

Good thing I don't rely on my factory alarm to prevent theft. I've got my home brew automatic anti-start module embedded in my wiring harness.
The facking theif can stick MY key in the ignition and STILL not start my truck.

Phoenix is BAD for car theft. They gonna have to TOW my truck if they want it!

Part 2 of my security system will be finished one of these days. The in cab "gas" deployment system, or however you want to describe something that will fukk up a theif in my truck.
I don't want my property stolen either :p

Radio man? what do you mean? the factory alarm is available on ALL (96 and up (Iknow for sure)and may well be on the older ones) Daks no matter a slt, sport or whatever, it comes in the ctm and you pay to have it activated when you buy it. Dodge has used only one ctm module since 96 when they came out with OBII. It is cheaper for them to have just one and activate what you want rather then to have one for factory alarm, another for intermitent wipers vs. standard, another for Daytime running lights, another for this option, another for that option.

I guess I did not explain it right. inserting a key does not disable the alarm, inserting THE key to your vehicle, and TURNING it to unlock it does. That way if the fob battery is dead, you can still get into your truck if the alarm is set, and the alarm can be set (lock the door with the power door locks BEFORE closing the door, either door it does not matter) and you can get the security you paid for.

Oh and radioman, the only diference (at least when I bought mine) was the slt has a lot of exterior chrome and the sport had all the chrome not there and replaced with paint. Also the slt had AC,a 22 gallon tank,Tach, extra lighting inside and under the hood and a bed light, nicer seats, better tires (yeah right) and wider rims.

the Security Group ie Vehicle Theft Alarm was an across the board option in all daks that year except a model they called "Base" and I aint never seen one of them

Hmm.. I had a 2001 Nissan for a while.
it had the chip in the key. I tested it. I got a copy of the key. opened the door with the copy. put copy in the igition and it cranked but would not start.

I then tried the factory key. It STILL would not start until I pushed the DISARM on the remote.

I don't believe our Chrysler keys have the chip in the key.

I bet you copy your key and it would start the truck. I should go try that here soon. And if that's the case, then a casual theif can simply jimmy the lock and do whatever. that sucks. I hate theifs.

not so, that's correct, my 02 Sport with 4.7, auto
and tow package has no power windows, power locks
(including a remote anything) and no alarm system
of any type.

I bought it new and I told the stealership what I
wanted. They *found* the truck I wanted including
the color within a hour on their linked computer
system. So my order wasn't really anything
special.

I've had DC's power everything in a 98 Dakota and
I didn't care for the break downs. Just more junk
to go wrong down the road.

I like the power windows and stuff. But i can USUALLY fix it myself.

On a side note. The passenger side power window on our 2004 Grand Caravan took a sh*t. Wife never uses it, but one day went to roll it down, and it didn;t.

And YES I made sure she didn't have the windows "locked out" :p

I haven't had time to check it out further OR take it in for warranty.

installed 1998 dodge dakota 5.2L magnum engine/trans, wiring harness, airbags, locks, ac/heater, fuel system, security, instrument gauge cluster, steering column, interior accessories into my my 1967 Buick Skylark, even took the floor pan its all a really nice fit but Now I have had to install a starter switch to try and bypass security, its not working is their anyway that the security controls the PCM and blocks the ignition for distributor and firing? How can I jump the signal into the ignition and engine? I might have fried the fuel pump too as it won't prime the engine anymore thinking about getting an in line pump, Has anybody got tips on getting through the security *&%$?

The security function is in the PCM. It will shut
down the engine, usually after 2-3 seconds.

Only fix is another PCM without security. Once it's
been enabled it can not be reset.
