Relax, Ron, your truck only has one PCM. What do you have ? While the other motors seem to need to have the correct vin flashed into them, my '00 4.7 ran fine on a boneyard $80 PCM while I was having mine custom flashed. Sometimes they are incompatible if one of the vehicles has anti-theft, but it shouldn't cost as much as you are being quoted.

Hi Kowalski. I have a 01 with a 3.9. What exactly is the function of the PCM? Is the code P0601 strictly for that? Or could it be something related. Also, where is the PCM located? Don't have an alarm. Any other suggestions on where I can take it besides the dealer?

The power control module is the brain that runs your truck; and this code indicates there is an internal problem with it. Yours is likely bolted to the right (passenger) side fender in the engine compartment, like mine. I'd try a used one (check out Car-Part.com) and have a dealer flash your vin # into it. Make sure it is for the same year, motor, not anti theft, transmission, and emissions (federal or Cali) as yours.

Kowalski,
Mine had the same code p 0601 and bought a boneyard PCM for 165.00 and it fixed a big idle problem and the engine code is gone. But when I drive it for about 2-5 minutes the emergency brake light comes on and also the ABS light comes on and stays on until I shut it off and start it back up again. What could this be?(maybe the previous PCM had brake problems?) Or do I need the dealer to flash it?

Have an '02 Dak with a 3.9. P0601 showed up last week - drove it for a week with no noticeable problems. Took it into dealership to clear the MIL and code. They replaced the PCM - no charge whatsoever since it is covered by 8yr/80K miles Federal Emissions (only have 69K miles on it).

My 99 just flashed the light, my hypertech tuner said p0601. Can someone tell me how to reset the PCM? On my Trooper, all you had to do was disconnect the + wire on the battery, and ground it out to - for a few seconds, walla, all lights out.....thanks

I have a 2000 dodge dakota 2.5l with 146,500 miles on it. I have
had this error code for probably over a year now. It hasn't
caused any problems for me at all except the pretty little red
light. Well I decided to try and get rid of the light and purchased
a refurbed and reflashed according my VIN and all that good
stuff. Well I unhooked the ground and unplugged the old ECU
waited 15 min. then hooked it all back up with the new ECU. It
all started right up and the pretty red light was gone. Well after
about 8 start ups later the light is back. What the heck is going
on? Is it another bad ECU or is there something outside of ECU
thats triggering it? I've looked all over and can't find any other
possible solutions except to change out ECU. I might be out a
few hundred bucks. Any ideas????

I went to Advanced Auto Parts yesterday and had a diagnostic run
to see what codes were making the light pop on. Come to find out
the P0601 code is gone (woo hoo!) but now its throwing 3: o2
censor codes. So something new for me to spend money on. So all
in all the good news is that the new ECU did get rid of the P0601
code as stated by many other members. I got the ECU from Ebay
225$ free shipping and send back the core for free. From Rick at
Solo Auto Electronics out of Miami, FL.

Hi,

I have a 2000 Dakota Club Cab, V8, 4 x 4.

I have read the above posts and can't seem to find where somebody posts a solution to clear the code. Is it here and I am not seeing it, or is it not here?

Thank you,

Mike

It is not here. Clearing this code would seem pointless, as it indicates the PCM is no good and would just come back - so why do you ask ? We've explained how to clear codes on many other threads though.

I am a rebuilder of ecu's at AutoSource Industries in Jacksonville, FL www.AutoSourceModules.com
P0601 is the death code. Although your vehicle may in fact run and continue to drive for months/years, your check engine light will not go off. However, it does mean it will eventually fail and hopefully your not on a busy interstate in rush hour traffic. The best bet is to replace the ecu and have it flashed with the vin, mileage and update if there is one available. We charge $395.95 for a replacement or if we can repair yours, its $299.95. Again the 601 code is not repairable. Don't let anyone lie and tell you otherwise. Call my shop and tell them I sent you Rob (tech guy) tell them I offered you $20 off OR free 2nd day shipping. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have and I will be 100% honest with you.

Yes, you can find them at local yards, eBay or even craigslist. I encourage anyone to save however they can. I don't want to sound like I am pushing my service :P - just wanted to let people know its available.

There are places online that will exchange PCM's that are already programmed for your truck. It's plug and play.
