Subject: High oil pressure?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm the proud owner of a 2001 Quad SLT+ 4x4, 4.7L. As long as I've had it, the oil pressure has always been on the high side. At cruising speed, the pressure gauge sits right at the extreme high end of the normal range. It never quite crosses the line into the "High" range but it's always bothered me a little. Is this typical behavior?

I have asked the same question I have an 02 Dak and a Durango with the 4.7 and what you are experiencing is considered normal for this engine.

Yes, you should be very concerned!!!!!
We thought everything was okay with our 2000 Dodge Dakota. Oil Pressure always read on right side of 40 (right in the middle). The other day Check Gages light came on and pressure dropped to 0. Turned engine off and when we turned it on it read normal again, 5 minutes later it happened again. We called the dealership and took the car straight there. First they said it was the oil screen. Then, they said it was the oil pump. We told them to replace both the screen and the pump. We have no warrenty left, truck has 56,000 MILES. When we went to pay for it they said we needed A NEW ENGINE!!!!!! I shouldn't have to pay that kind of money for a 2 year old truck. We called Dodge and they said they wouldn't help because it had been 8,000 miles since our last oil change. The manual says to change every 7500. 500 miles should not mean a new engine. We had no warning- BEWARE!!! We are still persuing Dodge, We hope their first answer isn't their last.

hey Don, psi translates out to pounds per square inch, so pounds is also short for psi.

Your truck has a pressure bypass valve that limits the oil pressure. If you are in the normal range you are fine. You only need to be concerned if you go past normal limits. Low oil pressure is what you should worry about. Your oil pressure should always go up with rpms and down when rpms drop off. You should not pay to much attention to oil pressure guage with cold oil. You realy are just looking for positive pressure on cold engine. Once the oil warms up you get much more accurate readings. If you were haveing a problem with excessive oil presure you would not see any change in pressure as RPM's rose and fell. THe bypass would be open all the time. You would also see seapage, bursting and bulgeing of the filter as well. It is considered normal to have 20-35 PSI at idle and then 10 psi increase for every 1000 RPM's. This has long been the minium oil pressures sought by enginieers for long term engine bearing life. The reason you see such low numbers listed in service manuals is for waranty work. The Big Three revised their standards a long time ago to get out of warranty repairs that were cutting into profit. I belive that the 4.7 has a bypass that kicks in around 98 psi. Do not quote me on that number. I will have to look it up in the Service Manual I just can not remember what is is for sure now.

I use mobil 1 super syn and my guage sits at the highest normal mark also. It drops to about midway at idle. I think it's just normal for the 4.7.

OPINIONS ARE LIKE....WELL, YOU KNOW THE REST!!

My oil pressure gauge has always sat right on the high mark at cruising speed. Rest of the time around town, that thing just swings back and forth like a tennis match!

I was told it was normal and the oil pressure gauge in the Daks aren't accurate anyway.

I've got 2001 3.9 and have this same issue. Most of the time the needle is just below 'high' and settles at idle to the middle. I fortunately have the 100,000 warranty so if it goes, they pay. Hope it doesn't either way but the way it sounds, daks run this way.

Changing oil pressure
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 97 Dakota with the 5.2 engine. Recently I have noticed that when I hit the brakes my oil pressure drops to aprox 20 psi. I had the switch changed, but it still drops to 20 psi when I hit the brakes and slow to a stop.
Has anyone else had this problem or know what the problem and or solution might be.
Thank You for any advice
Stephen

Are you stupid or something? Did you happen to pay attention where it says to only change the oil after 7500 miles if you don't drive fast, don't drive in dusty conditions and otherwise don't abuse it in any way at all? common sense would tell you to change your oil and filter every three thousand miles. come on get a clue.

The motor oil always needs to be changed around 3000 to 3500 miles. That's basic car care I assumed all people knew. Guess some people don't find out till it;s costing them put of their pockets.

seems "interesting" to call someone stupid for reading the owners manual. i'm sure dodge doesn't assume the vehicle will only be started and left idle in optimal temperatures and conditions. here's a news flash for the "experts"; the 3000 mile "magic number" is a GUIDLINE, not necessarily a hard and fast rule. OF COURSE it never hurts to change your oil frequently, just don't be ignorant, while trying to sound intelligent.

Im on my second durango, my 98 had a 360, oil pressure ran about 3/4. My 2001 has run on the max line of normall range since new, Ive got 38,000km now, and no change. Dealer tested the pressure in the shop, reved the sh*t out of it, and the diagnostic comp never read past normal, so they figured it was just a calibration slip at the factory, someone produced them a little off. If your concerned, get it tested, and see if the test matches what your gauge says, mine did not.

My 96 3.9L V6 has also sat right on the edge of the high line. I installed another Guage to read it and it reads normal. It's just a Chrysler thing. My friend Jeep reads a little high as well, but when checked was completely normal.

I have a 94 dakota it has run fine for years. Befor Christmass, I went to see my son . tThe oil pressure was higher than normal . When i got home I found the oil stick a qty. over, I though this was odd,an change the oil. Putting it on the mark. Every thing was fine. Then the oil pressure started to climb again, then check oil high on the stick again.Every time I notice the brake fluid was down.So I put a alarm system in. That seem to stop the oil an brake fuild changes . Then the 10w40 oil,oil guage went up and was below middle . Change oil to 30 (penn) oil pressure is normal again. Is there any truth if someone dumps 1qty. transmissin fluid in the crank case, that it will destroy the oil pump. Auto zone said yes, the dodge boys said no.Or brake fluid. Is there a key that opens all vehicals. The alarm works but what damage has been done .Drill hole thru hood release handle and screw up into dashboard. And i live in the sticks.USAF mechanic. If I catch them I will throw the book at them.

I know this is a Dodge Dakota forum but I have a question about high oil pressure in another vehicle and was wondering if anyone here could please help me out. My oil pressure rises nomally with revs and also falls normally with revs. The normal pressure is 45psi while driving on the highway. If I let off the gas fast my oil pressure goes from 45 or so to pegging the needle at 80psi before falling off -even though my revs are falling off fast the entire time. Vehicle is a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Oil and filter are new, air filter had oil blown back on it so it is new, and PCV set up was changed to new but still no luck. Thank-You.
