Yeap same problem here 2000 Dakota SLT w/extended cab. They have turned the rotors twice, replaced them once. Turned the drums twice and replaced those once. Still the same problem 40 to 30 MPH and under the vehicle shudders and jumps. I have 26,000 miles on this vehicle. Looks like nhtsa.com here I come not only is the hopping annoying as the previous folks have said, it is very much a safety issue.

I have had the same problem with my 2000 dak 4x4 sport 4.7. Since around 8000 miles, I have had rear brake pulsating or shuddering and am now at 17500 miles, with no worsening, but of course no improvement. Took it to the dealer and they said they found no problems with any brake components (was going to go to another dealer, but haven't had the time to as of yet). I just got done filing a complaint at NHTSA.com. They have a fairly simple online form you can fill out. Lets all do this so we can get a fire lit under DC's a**, and perhaps get a safe truck to drive in the process!

You are right on the money the nhtsa.com site is the place we all need to go for this. As you said most dealers as mine did found zero defects with the drums. Only after several more visits with complaints did they do anything about it.

Good Luck

Welcome to the Daimler Chrysler JUNK BRAKE CLUB.

I too was iniated last month.

Don't anyone tell you it was your driving style, lug nuts and all the other nonsense. The truth is that the BRAKES in Dodge trucks and Jeep herrokees are failing all over the nation by the thousands each month.

The truth is the product currently on our vechicles is simply garbage. The rotors are cheap, cheap, cheap and no matter what, you will be replacing them as long as you own your vechicle.

That pulsation and hopping you will experience upon braking is nothing more than your rotors saying adios.

The only question that remains is WHEN is DOdge going to do the right thing and recall ALL and replace. YOUR dealerships know exactly what is going on.

Check it out guys, the web sites are filled with horror stories of warped rotors on Dodge trucks.

Does anyone know if Dodge has replaced the ball joints and rotors with better ones on the 2000 or 2001 Dakotas? It seems to me that they have to be fully aware of the problem now. And are they covered on their warranty? I have been hearing Chrysler in Canada is now offering five year warranties instead of three.

What is the most recommended aftermarket rotors for the rear brakes? I had my warped front rotors replaced around 16K and put Power Slots on the front at 19K. By the way, Lex Brodie's (AC, Brakes, Etc.) hasn't got a clue about the best aftermarket brake rotors? I picked up my Baby THREE HOURS later than promised and they hadn't even burnished them in. They said they'd never seen these before. And apparently never read the INSTRUCTIONS THAT WERE IN THE BOX. The mechanic took it out and did "a few 90-mph stops" and "the problem went away". THe instructions, if he'd read it, says to specifically NOT do high speed stops; to do normal stops for around 200 miles. What a jerk.

I sent an E-mail to Chrysler Corp. yesterday concerning the brakes and rotors on the Dodge Dakota. I told them I owned a new one and although I have yet to have problems with the brakes and rotors, I have read a lot of your complaints concerning them.I even E-mailed them the Internet address to this sight and told them that it would pay them to monitor this sight to see just how disgruntled people are with the performance of the Dakota. I also sent a E-mail to NHTSA and told them of this sight and Dakota's brakes and rotor problems. I got an answer from Chrysler Corp. this morning saying that they have made changes to the brakes of the Dakota.Hopefully there will no longer be problems with the new trucks and Chrysler will fix the problems with the other ones.

2000 Dakota 4x4 4.7l sport Club 23,000K

Dealer replaced the rotors at 11K with factory pieces under warranty.

Dealer declined warranty on the rotors at 17K, had the rotors turned at the parts house. Rear drums are fine, although I don't jam the park brake very much.

23K - Rotors getting warped again. I'll start looking at aftermarket pieces, even though this 'truck' is used as grocery getter. Any recommeded rotor upgrades that anyone has done?

I'll file with the nhtsa.gov and recommend that every Dodge/Jeep owner with brake problems does the same to help resolve this SAFETY issue.

Sean, The word I have heard is that the factory pads generate too much heat! Have you changed those out? I intend to pursue that at my next service at the dealer. Maybe avoid the problem.

My brakes pulsate and shudder while coming to a stop and I have only have 6,500 miles on my 2001 CC 4x4, not very pleased. My 1999 SC 4x4 didnt have any problems at all when I traded it in with 25,000 miles on it. I will be having the dealer check the brakes at the next oil change and advise of the issue regarding pads generating too much heat for the rotor.

Good god almighty, and I thought I was going insane, I've got a 2000 CC sport 3.9 and I'm comming up on the 50,000 mi. marker pretty soon and my brake problems started around 5000 mi. and haven't ended yet, I've had the rotors remachined twice and replaced once and everytime it's "must be your driving style" F*ck you DC! If I hear that one more time from my dealer I'm gonna snap. If anyone know of any aftermarket brakes for the Dak please lets hear it I'm tired of waiting for DC to take responsibility for their crappy brakes, just want to be rid of the shaking. I mean the truck shakes so much when I brake it feel like a heroin addict going through withdrawl.

I have a '01 4.7L 4x4 Sport. And, like many of you, am having the same issue. At 16,000 i took my truck in complaining about the rotors and I got the "driving style" routine. I flipperd. I now have 27000 and the dealer told me that a lot of Daks are having the same issue. I've heard everything from crappy rotors to brake shoes running to hot. I had a Mazda truck prior to this and never had a problem with the brakes. Now, I have been to 3 differant parts stores and no one has replacement rotors. I don't want to buy them from Dodge since that is where the problem originated.

Where is everyone finding these replacement rotors?? Thanks

My 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 V-8 also has the same exact problem. I thought it was just my bad luck. 4 other guys that I work with had this same issue with there Dodge Dakota's/Durango's 99 and newer. All but one has traded in for something new. Anyone you know that has this same problem with there vehicles should complain to www.nhtsa.com. This is a EXTREME safety issue and something should be done to resolve this issue!

I just replaced mine with rotors from Autozone. I replaced them at 25k (about 8k too late)... and now have 40k on my truck. I can tell they are starting to warp again... so the replacements were not much better. They were a cheap way to get me back on the road. I'll look for some powerslots now that I have time.

See my post earlier in this string.

Found the latest group buy for Powerslot rotors here on dodgedakotas.com. Called Leon at truckperformance.com and left a message. Leon called me back with news that he's taken on responsibility for the Dakota owners that have rotor problems by offering us a price 'brake' (sorry, bad pun) on Powerslots. Ordered a pair and saved $38 off retail. Based on Leon's recommendation, I'll be putting on new Raybestos quietstop pads as well (probably)which is like getting 'free' pads based on the savings on the rotors. Too bad we have to spend our own money for something that should work from the factory. Thanks dodgedakotas.com and Leon for helping us out on the group buy. See the group buy forum for more info....

BTW: If you are suffering the same brake problems, please submit the complaint form at NHTSA.gov in the hopes that we will get compensation.

I also have the same problem. In November i took my truck in because when i would brake and got to
40 miles per hour my truck would hop. Let me remind you that when we bought the truck we wanted a towing package with it and we got it.
So when we brought it in the told me my rear brake drums were warped and i said what from
he fold me from excessive heat he asked if we had
ever pulled a trailer with it and we said yes maybe twice and he said that was why. What a bunch of b.s.It cost us 50.00 some dollars to get it fixed.
But according to all the other complaints it will
just be a matter of time before it does it again.
