The sensor is located right on top of the differential. I did not know what the differential was either until I started reading these forums. It seems like a very easy fix. But when you try to pull the sensor out you will see that an o-ring keeps the sensor stuck. have to use a flat screwdriver to break it off.

Just finished replacing the sensor on my 99 Ram 1500 4WD AT. Took me about 30 minutes.
My problems were the same as many others here. (ABS & brake light on and speedometer problems).
Paid $42 at AutoZone P# BU3356 for the sensor.
This fixed all of my problems.
The only thing that I can add to the instructions from the previous posts is to take your time pulling the old sensor out. It is pretty tight.
I just kept working on it. I first tried rocking it a bit but it wouldnt budge, but it will spin easy to the point where you can get better leverage with a flathead.
It would have been a quicker job but I had to keep going back to my toolbox.

Here are the tools that I needed.

- 13MM Socket
- 14MM deep socket & wrench
- flashlight comes in handy
- WD40 to help loosen bolts
- a couple flathead screwdrivers

Thanks to everybody else's advise. It did save me alot of money.

I have a 2004 dodge ram. my brake and abs light kept coming on and then would go off when i cute the truck off. they may or may not come back on. at a red light or in park the speedometer would bouce from 0 to about ten. it would do this when the truck was on but wasn't cranked up. i had decided to go and replace the abs sensor. i was about to order one and decided to look on the internet for a part number came across someone with a similar problem. they got a reply saying check the plug located next to the master cylinder. i decided to try that before i went and spent 80 dollars on a sensor. took me forever to figure out how to get it unplugged but finally got it off and it had water dripping out of it. cleaned it out and cleaned the posts.(i sprayed wd-40 in it. don't know if thats how you're suppose to do it but it worked for me.) let it dry plugged it back in and the problem with the bouncing speedometer is gone. just something else to try.

I have a 2003 Dakota with the ABS and brake light on. Funny thing is it only happens when the temperature is very very cold. When the temp gets above 40F the lights go out. Speedometer works fine. Can't figure this one out. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this type of problem... Thanks.. Pete

I have the same issue, engine light (bought a new gas cap as error was P0455), ABS and break light. I'm assuming that the ABS sensor and rear speed sensor are the same?? I went to the dealer and asked for a rear speed sensor, and they gave me one?!?! Of course on the way home, the ABS and break lights went off (*%&$^#&$*)!! Will try to replace anyway. If they are the same, what is the best way to get at it? I don't own lifts or jacks and don't really see a good way of getting to it...assuming I'm looking in the right place.
Thanks.

ABS and BRAKE LIGHT ON

My 1995 RAM 1500 Sport has both the lights on and a good working speedo. RWABS Kelsey/Hayes system. Changed the ABS sensor. Lights still on. Did a ABS code check. Got a code 4. This refers to a: "Close HCU RWAL reset switch". The HCU is the Hydraulic control unit and in there is a reset switch that sends a signal to the CAB (controller antilock brake computer). The precedure I am checking is to unplug both the components above check the terminals (dirty etc.) and check for shorts in the wiring harness. With the test light clipped to your battery and probeing the RWAL reset switch circuit at the computer ABS plug, the light should stay off. If it does go on the HCU is bad, replace it. and the HCU (4 wire) plugged back in. Press the brake pedal firmly, with the test light in the same reset terminal and it should not come on. If it does there is a short in the HCU, replace it. This is from ondemand5. You may need a schematic to find your wire colors and component locations. Hope this helps but it looks like I may be changing my HCU or CAB. I am testing this tomorrow so I have no results. But I never heard of any tests like this in previous posts so I thought you might be interested to know that it is not always the abs diff sensor. Bought mine from NAPA in Canada part number was 530000.

guy, at last a post with similar problems to mine. Does your HCU run all the time? Mine does. I pulled the fuse and have just been running without ABS. I have already replaced the rear differential sensor with no joy. Have you been able to open the HCU ? I got mine off but can't get inside it. Please post back when you are done today with your findings. I have not been ablr to find any descent schematics for the system and am very interested in the reset feature you mentioned in your post
Thanks in advance.

ABS / E-brake lights on
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '93 V6 5 spd with rear ABS. I just changed the speed sensor to fix ABS and brake light on the dash. My speedometer was working fine. As I have almost never done any work on vehicles I found it a very easy (15 minute) job after researching on the net. The sensor is slightly towards the front of the rear differential. Contrary to many posts I found, I had only 1 bolt and no nuts to remove as shown in the diagram below. Here are the steps I found most useful slightly modified for my experience:
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
2. Remove 1/2" bolt top using deep box wrench. Remove the cable bracket attached at this point and move out of the way slightly.
3. Press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor (2 clips on the side)
4. Wiggle sensor out of hole in top of differential.
5. Dip finger in hole and put differential oil on O ring on new sensor
6. Push new sensor into place and bolt in.
7. Put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds. Step on the brake pedal at this point to put a current drain on the computer system (assures a reset condition)
8. Reconnect negative post of car battery
9. Start truck to test.

Here is a diagram I found on the net showing where the sensor is:

http://arrc.epnet.com/autoapp/8847/8...eed_Sensor.htm

I bought the part at NAPA for $32cdn + tax. Dealer price was $117. OEM part #4485161. Napa part #530000 available in Canada and U.S. I also found the part available on EBay and many online parts stores. Search on the OEM part #.

Hope this helps someone!

ABS/ BRAKE light on and speedo not working below about 30mph is the RWSS(Rear Wheel Speed Sensor) located in the center section of the rear differential. The MAP sensor code is something totally different.

P.S. Next time instead of dredging up an old post you can start a new one and psot it under one of the other boards as this isn't a recall. You would definitely get a faster response.

I had both brake and ABS lights on and the speadometer wouldn't budge until I hit 30 mph. When it did respond it wavered a lot and acted pretty flaky. Also my truck (1999 Dakota, 4wd, 6cyl, manual)would occasionally stall when I slowed down at intersections and the steering became very stiff at slow speeds.

Replacing the rear ABS speed sensor seems to have solved all of these problems.
