I just had this problem on my 03 Dakota, the abs light and the parking brake light came on. It turns out it was a bad banjo bolt in the left rear calipher.

My dads 99 v6 dak has the same problem. I went to the dealer and they said the speed sensor was $101.00 All the posts on this page were somewhere in the $30-$35 range for the same sensor. So where besides the dealer can I get the sensor?

Replaced the Rear ABS with no problem, Brake and ABS lights went out, but now the Speedometer doesn't work at all and the odometer is not working either. Two days later the "Check engine" light came on? I am pretty much lost. Any suggestions other than take it to a dealer?

1998 Dodge Ram: ABS and brake lights are on, speedometer works fine. Removed and cleaned metal particals from rear axle speed signal generator.
This did not solve my problem. I ohmed out the sensor and it showed that it was "open". Should I get an ohme reading? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Rick in Wyoming!

I am having the same problem with my '99 DOdge Ram 2500 Quad cab 4x4. I just ordered the sensor from Chrysler Parts Direct for $21.80 plus shipping...

It sounds like this is definitely the same problem I am having... I came across this site with a Google search - thanks for the info.

The website I ordered from is:

My '99 Dakota's ABS & Brake light went on and the speedo only works from 30MPH and above. The Dodge dealer said to come in and pay $105 for a diagnostic/code scan, then 1-1/2 hours plus $70 for parts if it was the sensor. I called the parts dept and they told me "rear speed sensor" part number 56028187AE would cost $46.78 I think these postings just saved me a coupla hundred bucks. THANKS

Thanks all.

I was having the same problem you guys were describing and got the rear speed sensor, $32, replaced on my own in less than 30min.

Everything works fine now, just got to disconnect my battery so that my check engine light turns off.

But 32 bucks, half an hour on a saturday morning, and a bruise on my shoulder because I hit myself as I was coming out from underneath my truck, just saved me $105 for a diagnostics, $50 for the speed sensor (those bastards really do like to raise the price,) and maybe even another $75 for having them replace the speed sensor themselves.

Anybody got any questions on how to replace the speed sensor on a '99 dakota let me know agonza07@yahoo.com

Be careful though, I've heard that some people don't remove the speed sensor correctly and end up having to open up the differential to get that sucker out.

Mine went out just about a month ago. Just over 77,000 miles. Man that replaced mine said he does a lot of these for Dodge vehicles.

My ABS light and Brake light went on about two months ago on my 99 Dakota. Speedometer would not work until I hit about 25. I took it to the dealership and had the speed sensor replaced under warranty. Everything was OK. Just a couple of weeks ago a new problem arose. Now the ABS and Brake lights come on and stay on, but not right away like before. Instead they come on after a while, anywhere from 2 to even 10 minutes after I begin driving, ususally while braking. Could it be the that I recieved a faulty sensor? Was it installed incorrectly? I HATE dealing with the dealership and would rather fix my problems myself so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had my speed sensor replaced the first time under warranty at Klaben Dodge in Kent. I don't have the factory warranty though, I bought my truck used and purchased an Easy Care Vehicle Protection Plan that covers it until 100,000 or 7 years old. You might be up the creek if you are under the Dodge 7/70 warranty. Other posts on this board suggest though that it is not a difficult repair and not an expensive part. All I know is that on vehicles equipped with rear wheel ABS, like mine, only have one speed sensor and it sits atop the rear diff. You don't even have to open up the diff to replace it. Vehicles equipped with 4 wheel ABS have sensors on both front wheels and possibbly both rear, but I'm not sure. I know there are at least 3 though.
