Oh yea, forgot to mention that when I did hook the
stock deck back up (with the amp wire connected to
the metal tab on the deck case) everything worked
fine. Got sound to speakers and all. Still not
getting that with new deck though.

Ok one more thing... heh, sorry guys, just going
over things as they come up. Just wondering also
about the fact that the Alpine deck has a set of
RCA jacks on it. I know usually they would go to
an amp if it was an after market amp. But should I
be trying to connect them to the stock amp and if
so is there an easy was of connecting an RCA
hookup to what is only a single wire on the truck?
Sorry for the multiple posts here, just trying to
give the most amount of info I can so that someone
might be able to help me out here. I'm no pro, but
I've done deck installs before and never had this
problem. Starting to develop a twitch :-P
Thanks again.

The ground wire attached to the radio is not for the amplifier, it is for the radio itself. There is no ground wire in the radio wire harness for the radio, Dodge grounds the case of the radio to metal behind the dash. In earlier years from like the 70's on up to the late 90's they used a metal braided ground strap. Some time in the late 90's to 2000 they started using a plain ground wire, copper wire about 16 gauge but it still was connected to the case of the factory radio and bolted to metal behind and below the radio to ground it. The shield on the antenna cable also serves as a ground but is a pretty poor ground, electrically speaking because of rust and corrosion that builds up at the antenna base mount on the undeside of the fender. Best thing I can tell you is if you have sound with the ground cable connected to the factory radio, then twist the factory ground wire or cable together with the ground wire for the new Alpine deck, and connect them both to about a 14 gauge wire, run it down to the passenger's kick panel and ground it under an existing nut or bolt there. It sounds like there might a problem in your truck with ground for the radio and/or factory amp.

From what you posted here, it sounds to me like the amplifier is not turning on. Be sure to connect the amplifier remote on wire in the radio harness to the Alpine remote on lead. If you used a matching wire harness so you didn't have to cut up the factory harness, then be sure the blue/white wire from the Alpine is connected to the blue/white wire on the mating harness. Sometimes depending on the manufacturer of the harness, the amp remote on wire is solid blue and there is no blue/white. If so, the solid blue wire is the amp remote on wire. And take a good look at the mating harness, be sure the amp remote wire on it connects to the right pin and wire on the radio harness. On the radio side of the harness the amp remote on wire is green with an orange or sometimes a red stripe. I have seen harnesses in the past where the wire skipped the right pin and therefore the amp would not turn on.

There is no need to make any connections to the low level RCA's on the Alpine. The factory amp is wired with speaker level inputs and it will also work the same with the Alpine deck. But it will be somewhat loudere with the volume knob at a lower volume level than the factory deck was.

Hope that helps. Post back if there is anything else you need. I am glad to help if I can.

Took a close look at the harness for the truck
looking for the blue wire like you said and ended
up find the amp wire, for some reason on the
harness I bought for the truck it was labeled as
the power for the antennae, just took the remote
wire from the deck to that wire and boom .. music!
You were right the amp just wasn't coming on
before. Got confused cause that ground for the old
deck was actually labeled "AMP" too. Wasn't until
I tried putting the old deck back in like you
suggested that I realized where it was going to.
Anyway got the thing in today and went for a
cruise just to listen to it and it works great...
now onto the speaker upgrade! :-D Thanks again
Jimmy, really appreciate the help!

Hi Jimmy,

I read your message about connecting the blue/white wire to the blue wire will turn on the factory amp. I have the same problem. I connected the blue wire of the harness adapter to the blue wire of the Pioneer harness. The amp is not turned on when I turn on the pioneer mp3 player. Modifiedlife.com has the wire diagram for Dodge Caravan 2002.
Car Radio Constant 12v+ Wire: Gray/Red
Car Radio Switched 12v+ Wire: Black/Pink
Car Radio Ground Wire: Chassis Or Metal Strap
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Orange/Tan
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: N/A
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger: N/A
Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: Gray/Green

I don't see the gray/green cable coming out of the harness. what should I do?

Thank you
Vu

You need to connect the blue/white wire from the Pioneer unit to the blue wire in your mating harness. The solid blue only has power on it when the radio is on. The blue/white has power on it no matter which source is selected whether it is cd, radio, mp3, doesn't matter. That's why there is no sound from the MP3 player.

Hello,

I just bought some Polk audio speakers to replace the worn out stock speakers in my 2001 Dakota Quad Cab with the Infinity upgrade. I bought the DB6501 Component System for the front and it comes with a crossover box to split the tweeters from the woofers.
My question is since the Infinity has the separate tweeters in the door already, do I need to use the crossover that came with my speakers?
And if I do need to use it, where do I put them in the wiring scheme?
Thanks

Yes, use the crossovers that came with the new speakers. The crossover has an input which is where you connect the speaker output wires from the radio or amplifier, and it has a set of outputs for the tweeter and a set of outputs for the mid/woofer. Don't mount the crossovers in the door, it is best to keep them in the cab and run new wires to the tweeters and mid/woofers.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy. You are the brains of this site!

Do you know the color code for the wires under the dash that I would need to connect to the crossover?
And also where would be the best place to tap into them at?

At the factory Infinitry amp in the passenger's kick panel, the speaker output wires are:

Light Blue/Purple Right Front +
Light Blue/Black Right Front -

Light Green/Purple Left Front +
Light Green/Black Left Front -

White/Red Left Rear +
White/Black Left Rear -

Tan/Purple Right Rear +
Tan/Black Right Rear -

You can mount the crossover networks either in the kick panels with double sided tape or wire ties, under one of the front seats, pretty much anywhere they will fit and not be an obstruction to safe driving or get wet or otherwise damaged.

If you are installing the new speakers in the front doors, you can mount the crossovers in each front kick panel or wire tie them up out of the way under the dash, on each side of the cab. Then look in the wire harness in the door jamb going into each front door and find the corresponding speaker wires for the door. If you can cut the speaker wire near the door jamb harness, one set of cut wires will be the input to the crossover and the other will be the wire you connect to the mid/woofer output from the crossover. In the door, connect the wires at the lower factory mid/woofer location to the new mid/woofer and then all you will need to do is run a new wire into the truck for the new tweeter.

There is a rubber boot in the door jamb that all the wires for the factory speaker, door lock, power windows and door latch/dome lamp switch run through. On the door side of the boot, it is just a large thick rubber boot but on the truck door jamb side of that boot, there is a hard plastic molex connector connecting the wires from the door to the truck body. I guess they do it that way so if you have to replace the door you can basically just plug in the wires from the new door to the connector to save time and labor. It's nearly impossible to pass a wire through the molex connector at the door side of the boot. What you can do is cut a hole in the bottom side of the flat rubber grommet for the boot on the door side and run your new wires through the hole. The rubber is pretty hard and thick, when I did mine I actually drilled a hole in it. Then on the door jamb side, a couple of inches below the flat rubber part of the grommet there is an unused round rubber grommet. You can pop that grommet out and poke a hole in it to run the wire for the tweeter into the cab of the truck.

If you choose not to cut into the speaker wires in the door jamb harness, you can just run two new speaker wires, one for the tweeter and one for the mid/woofer through the door jamb that way. Then just connect the speaker output wires from the factory amp to the crossover for the new splits. If you do it that way you don't connect any of the factory speaker wires in the doors to the new tweeters or mids. It's actually better and more reliable to run your own new wires this way, but it's not completely necessary. If you have the time, that's the most reliable way to do it but either using new speaker wire or running your own new wire will work fine.

One thing I thought of this morning that may confuse and/or help you is I think the speaker level inputs to the factory Infinity amp may have the same colors as the speaker output wires from the amp. If I remember it right the speaker output wires from the amp are a little bit larger gauge than the input wires. Also you may have input wires at the amp from the radio that have the old Chrysler/Dodge colors, which I don't know by heart, but I think it goes like this:

Right Front Spkr (+) Purple
Right Front Spkr (-) Blue w/ Red Stripe

Left Front Spkr (+) Dark Green
Left Front Spkr (-) Brown w/ Red Stripe

Right Rear Spkr (+) Blue w/ White Stripe
Right Rear Spkr (-) Blue w/ Orange Stripe

Left Rear Spkr (+) Brown w/ Yellow Stripe
Left Rear Spkr (-) Brown w/ Blue Stripe

You will need to remove the passenger's kick panel and see what color wires you have. You can check the speaker wires by cutting the wires that should be for the speaker outputs at the amp and use a 9 volt battery. Touch one wire to the + post and the other wire to the - post on the battery and when you find 2 wires that go to a speaker, the speaker cone will move and make a popping noise. You can also test for polarity of the speaker wires, when you have the positive post of the battery connected to the positive speaker wire, the cone on the speaker will move outward, away from the speaker basket or frame. If you have the polarity reversed, the speaker cone will move backwards.

It's a good idea to unplug the radio and amplifier while doing these tests. That way you don't send voltage back into the radio or amp and risk damaging them.

I was looking at your forums, and I think I found the right place. I have a 2004 Dodge Durango, with the infinity sound system. My factory radio, stopped working (getting some radio stations)nothing else. I have an old Pyle radio with RCA hook ups on the back, and bought a wiring harness to install into the Durango. I wired everything up but cannot get power or sound at all. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

Be sure to connect the amplifier remote on wire from the Pyle radio to the blue or bue/white wire in the harness to install the radio in the truck. On most radios the amp remote on wire is blue with a white stripe. And be sure the amp remote on wire in the harness connects to the correct amp remote on wire in the radio harness on the truck side, it is dark green with an orange or red stripe.

Don't use the RCA outputs from the radio as inputs to the factory amp. It won't get loud enough, unless you have the adjustable interface for the amp, and even that one is a pain to work with. Just use the harness that has only speaker wires on it and connect the speaker outputs from the radio to the speaker level inputs on the wire harness. Plus that one costs less. You can buy it at Walmart or Autozone, Advance, etc.

If there still is no sound, either the Pyle radio is bad or there is a problem with the amp. I doubt the amp is bad or it would not have worked to begin with. Check the speaker outputs on the Pyle radio by connecting a known working speaker to them.

Thanks Jimmy, however, on the install harness that I purchased, I only have a solid blue (antennae on), an orange wire (illumination), and a brown wire (mute), left, after all of the speaker wires are connected. Which one would I use to turn on the amp? I appreciate your assistance, this is driving me nuts!

Use the solid blue wire on the harness to turn on the amp. Connect the blue/white from the radio to the solid blue in the harness. Be sure the solid blue wire matches up with the dark green/orange or dark green/red in the truck radio harness.

Also be sure you have a good ground for the radio. The factory radio ground cable gets corroded with age. Ground the new radio to clean solid metal under an existing bolt or nut in one of the kick panels.

i have a 2001 dakota sport which i bought with the stereo and ac/ heater control were stolen along with most of the bezel. previous owner said her radio would cut out and turn itself on and off when she was driving. i put a factory dodge radio from a chrysler sebring. i dont have a place to plug in my pci bus (violet/yellow stripe)connector to. The dakota is equipped with infinty premium (six Speaker) sound system. i have the chiltons manual and the diagram for the dakota is different than it says it is. when im driving the power source to the radio comes in contact with something to make it go off or short out( flashing on and off or constant power surge( flickering) then when car is off its fine. i also noticed in the wiring harness there was a wire attached to the (red/white stripe) that was supposed to be connected to some other wire but only part of a solid blue wire( which i believe was used to stretch the wire and make it longer from the factory. You got any advise ??????????
